Indications
Zyrtec is an antihistamine medication that functions to diminish the impact of endogenous chemical histamine in the human body. Histamine, when released in excessive amounts, can induce unpleasant symptoms such as sneezing, itching, lacrimation, and rhinorrhea.
In both adult and pediatric populations, Zyrtec is prescribed to mitigate the manifestations of cold or allergy symptoms, including sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose. Furthermore, Zyrtec is efficacious in addressing the symptoms of chronic urticaria, specifically, itching and inflammation.
Uses and Dosage
Adhere to the label directions or the instructions provided by your healthcare provider when using Zyrtec. Older adults may require a lower dose than usual, follow the instructions provided by your doctor.
You can take this medication with or without food. However, note that the orally disintegrating tablet should not be swallowed whole. Instead, allow it to dissolve in your mouth without chewing and swallow several times as it dissolves. If needed, drink some liquid to help swallow the dissolved tablet.
If your symptoms fail to improve, worsen, or you have a fever, contact your doctor.
Store Zyrtec at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Avoid freezing liquid medication.
Side Effects
Allergic Reactions
Signs of an allergic reaction may require emergency medical attention:
- Hives
- Difficulty breathing
- Swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat
Severe Side Effects
Notify your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following:
- Fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeat
- Weakness, tremors, or insomnia
- Severe restlessness or hyperactivity
- Confusion
- Vision problems
- Little or no urination
Common Side Effects
- Drowsiness or tiredness
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Feeling hot or sweating
- Numbness, tingling, or burning pain
- Decreased sense of taste
- Headache
- Upset stomach, nausea, or constipation
- Dry mouth or sore throat
Caution
Prior to taking cetirizine, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist of any allergies you have, including to cetirizine itself, hydroxyzine, levocetirizine, or other substances.
This medication may contain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions or other adverse effects. Please consult your pharmacist for additional information.
Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have difficulty urinating due to an enlarged prostate, kidney disease, or liver disease.
If you are using cetirizine to treat hives, promptly notify your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms, as they may indicate a more serious condition: hives with an unusual color, hives that appear bruised or blistered, or hives that do not itch.
Cetirizine may cause drowsiness. The use of alcohol or marijuana can exacerbate drowsiness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing tasks requiring alertness until you can do so safely. Refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages. Discuss the use of marijuana with your doctor.
Liquid cetirizine products may contain sugar. Use caution if you have diabetes. Consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist to ensure the safe use of this product.
Prior to undergoing surgery or dental procedures, inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are using, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal supplements.
During pregnancy, cetirizine should only be used if deemed necessary by your doctor after weighing the potential risks and benefits.
Cetirizine is excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding while using this medication.
