Description
Indications
Ezetimibe is indicated as an adjunct to a low-cholesterol/low-fat diet and exercise regimen to aid in the reduction of blood cholesterol levels. It can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other lipid-lowering agents, including “statins” or fibrates. Ezetimibe exerts its therapeutic effect by inhibiting intestinal absorption of cholesterol, resulting in decreased serum cholesterol levels. This pharmacological action is believed to confer a beneficial impact on cardiovascular outcomes, including reducing the risk of stroke and myocardial infarction.
Uses and Dosage
Zetia (Ezetimibe) functions by inhibiting the intestinal absorption of cholesterol, thereby reducing the amount of cholesterol that your body absorbs. You have to adhere to a cholesterol-lowering diet while taking this medication.
The administration of this medication should be in accordance with the prescription of your doctor, usually once daily with or without food. The dose of this medication is determined by your medical condition and response to treatment.
If you are concurrently taking a bile acid sequestrant (e.g., cholestyramine, colestipol), you should take ezetimibe at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after the administration of the bile acid sequestrant. The binding of these products to ezetimibe can impede the full absorption of the drug.
Take this medication regularly to derive the maximum benefit from it. To aid in remembering, take it at the same time each day.
Continue taking this medication even if you feel well. A majority of individuals with high cholesterol may not experience any symptoms. The full therapeutic effect of this medication may take up to 2 weeks to manifest.
