Indications 

Lisinopril is indicated for the management of hypertension. Its therapeutic action, which facilitates the reduction of high blood pressure, is considered a preventative measure against cerebrovascular accidents, myocardial infarctions, and nephropathies. Furthermore, this drug is employed for the treatment of heart failure and to enhance survival rates after an acute cardiac event. As an ACE inhibitor, Lisinopril operates by inducing vasodilation, thereby promoting smoother blood flow within the circulatory system. 

Uses and Dosage 

Zestril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, is prescribed for the management of hypertension in adults and children aged six years or older. Zestril is utilized in the treatment of congestive heart failure in adults and in enhancing survival rates post-myocardial infarction. This medication should be taken orally once daily, with or without food, according to the physician’s instructions. 

In the case of the suspension form of this medication, ensure to shake the bottle well before each dose and accurately measure the prescribed dose with a special measuring device/spoon to avoid dosage errors. You should not use a household spoon as it may result in incorrect dosing. 

The dosage of Zestril is primarily based on the patient’s medical condition and response to treatment. For children, the dose is dependent on body weight. To minimize the possibility of side effects, the prescribing physician may recommend initiating the medication at a low dose and gradually increasing it. You have to adhere to the medical practitioner’s directives to ensure optimal treatment outcomes. 

Side Effects 

During the initial stages of treatment, due to the adjustment period of the medication patients may experience:  

• Dizziness 
• Lightheadedness 
• Fatigue 
• Headache 

You may experience a dry cough. If any of these symptoms persist or worsen, inform the physician or pharmacist immediately. 

To prevent dizziness and lightheadedness, rise slowly from a sitting or lying position. 

It should be noted that the physician has prescribed this medication after evaluating the benefits and risks, and the potential benefits outweigh the possible adverse effects. The majority of individuals who use this medication do not experience severe side effects. 

However, patients should report any severe side effects to their doctor immediately, including fainting or symptoms indicative of high potassium levels in the blood such as muscle weakness or slow/irregular heartbeat. 

Cautions 

Prior to commencing lisinopril treatment, inform your physician or pharmacist about any history of allergies, including allergic reactions to ACE inhibitors like benazepril, or any other allergies. This drug may contain inactive components that could elicit an allergic reaction or other complications. Therefore, seek further advice from your pharmacist. 

Before using lisinopril, disclose your medical history to your physician or pharmacist, especially if you have a history of angioedema (a severe allergic reaction characterized by facial/lip/tongue/throat swelling), blood filtering procedures such as LDL apheresis or dialysis, or high levels of potassium in your blood. You should provide your medical history to ensure that the use of this medication is safe and effective for you.
