Description
IndicationsÂ
Xalatan Preservative Free is an ophthalmic solution used to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It is a preservative-free formulation of the medication Latanoprost.Â
The preservative-free formulation of Xalatan is beneficial for individuals who may be sensitive or have adverse reactions to preservatives commonly found in ophthalmic solutions, such as benzalkonium chloride (BAK).Â
Latanoprost belongs to a class of medications called prostaglandin analogs. It works by increasing the outflow of fluid from the eye, thereby reducing the pressure inside the eye. Lowering IOP is important in managing conditions such as glaucoma, as high pressure can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss.Â
Use and DosageÂ
Xalatan Preservative Free is typically administered as eye drops. The recommended dosage is usually one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily, preferably in the evening.Â
To properly apply Xalatan drops and ensure their effectiveness, follow these steps:Â
- Wash your hands before applying the eye drops to maintain cleanliness and prevent contamination.Â
- Tilt your head back and look upward. Gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket.Â
- Hold the dropper directly over your eye and place one drop into the pocket you created with your lower eyelid.Â
- Look downward, close your eyes gently, and place one finger at the inner corner of your eye, near your nose. Apply light pressure for 1 to 2 minutes. This helps prevent the medication from draining out of your eye.Â
- Avoid blinking or rubbing your eye during this time.Â
- Repeat these steps if your doctor has prescribed more than one drop per dose.Â
If you need to use Xalatan in both eyes, repeat the process for your other eye. Do not rinse the dropper. After each use, replace the dropper cap to maintain sterility.Â
If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using Xalatan. Wait for at least 15 minutes before putting your contact lenses back in. If you are also using other eye medications, such as drops or ointments, wait at least 5 minutes before applying them. Use the eye drops before the ointments to allow the drops to enter the eye effectively.Â
