Drug Description

Indications

Welchol is a pharmacological agent that effectively reduces low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, commonly referred to as “bad” cholesterol, in the bloodstream.

The reduction of LDL cholesterol may mitigate the risk of developing atherosclerosis, a condition that can lead to cardiovascular complications such as heart attacks, stroke, and circulation issues.

Welchol is used for the management of hypercholesterolemia in adults and pediatric patients aged ten years and older. Welchol is used concurrently with statin cholesterol-lowering medications, including atorvastatin, lovastatin, simvastatin, Crestor, Lipitor, Pravachol, Zocor, among others.

Welchol can improve blood glucose regulation in adults afflicted with type 2 diabetes mellitus; this is not suitable for treating type 1 diabetes.

Uses and Dosage

The medication should be taken orally with a meal. When taking the tablet form, it should be swallowed with a liquid, such as water or milk. In case of difficulties in swallowing the tablet, consult with the physician concerning switching to the powder form of the medication.

For maximum benefits, take this medication regularly, and at the same time(s) each day to assist in recollection. It may take a few weeks before the full effect of this drug can be experienced.

It should be noted that Colesevelam may potentially decrease the absorption of other concomitantly administered products such as cyclosporine, glipizide, glimepiride, glyburide, levothyroxine, and phenytoin, including birth control pills containing ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone.

Other medications should be taken according to the instructions provided by the physician, preferably at least four hours before taking colesevelam. If unsure of when to take the medication, please consult with the pharmacist.

Side Effects

Please seek emergency medical attention if you observe any indications of an allergic response, including hives, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Welchol has the potential to induce significant adverse effects. Consequently, discontinue using Welchol immediately and notify your physician if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Severe constipation
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Pancreatitis, indicated by severe upper stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting

In addition, the following are frequent side effects of Welchol:

  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Upset stomach

Cautions

Prior to initiating colesevelam, kindly inform your physician or pharmacist about any allergic reactions you may have experienced with this medication or any other allergies. This medication may contain inactive constituents that can cause hypersensitivity reactions or other complications. Consult your pharmacist for additional details.

Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your physician or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of pancreatitis caused by elevated triglyceride levels, high levels of triglycerides, difficulty in swallowing, stomach/intestinal issues such as constipation, blockage, gastroparesis, recent major surgery in the intestinal area, or hemorrhoids.

Because this medication can impede the absorption of specific vitamins (such as vitamins A, D, E, K) if used over an extended period, your doctor may suggest a multivitamin supplement. Take the multivitamin at least four hours before taking your colesevelam dosage.
