Description
Indications
Diclofenac, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), reduces pain and inflammation-causing substances in the body. Voltaren is used to treat various conditions. Voltaren oral tablets can relieve mild to moderate pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.
Uses and Dosage
Follow your doctor’s instructions for taking this medication orally, usually 2-4 times daily. Unless your doctor directs otherwise, take it with a full glass of water (8 ounces/240 milliliters). After taking it, avoid lying down for at least 10 minutes. If you experience stomach upset, taking this medication with food, milk, or an antacid may help. However, this may delay pain relief by slowing absorption.
Swallow the tablets whole without crushing, chewing, or breaking them to prevent stomach upset.
Your dose depends on your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking. To minimize the risk of stomach bleeding and other side effects, take this medication at the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time. Do not increase your dose or take it more frequently or longer than prescribed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor or pharmacist.
For certain conditions, such as arthritis, it may take up to two weeks of regular use to get the full benefit.

Cautions
If you have a history of allergic reactions to aspirin or NSAIDs, avoid using Voltaren.
Diclofenac, the active ingredient in Voltaren, can increase the risk of fatal heart attacks or strokes. Therefore, do not use diclofenac just before or after heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass graft or CABG).
In addition, diclofenac may cause stomach or intestinal bleeding, which can be life-threatening. These complications may occur without warning, especially in older adults. Therefore, you must closely monitor your symptoms while using this medication and promptly report any signs of stomach or intestinal bleeding to your doctor.
