Drug Description

Indications

Vibramycin is a tetracycline antibiotic that exhibits bacteriostatic properties by inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria.

Indicated for the treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections, Vibramycin is particularly effective against acne, urinary tract infections, intestinal infections, eye infections, gonorrhea, chlamydia, periodontitis (gum disease), and other infections.

Vibramycin has been found effective in treating blemishes, bumps, and acne-like lesions associated with rosacea, but it does not alleviate the facial redness caused by the disease.

In addition to these indications, certain formulations of doxycycline (the active ingredient in Vibramycin) may be used to prevent malaria, treat anthrax, or manage infections caused by mites, ticks, or lice.

Uses and Dosage

Before taking doxycycline, read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by their pharmacist. Any questions should be directed to the patient’s doctor or pharmacist.

This medication is taken orally on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after a meal, as directed by the doctor. A full glass of water (8 ounces/240 milliliters) should be taken with the medication, unless advised otherwise.

If stomach upset occurs, taking the medication with food or milk may be helpful, although it may reduce the effectiveness of the medication. Patients are advised not to lie down for at least 10 minutes after taking the medication.

Do not to take this medication within two to three hours of products containing aluminum, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, or bismuth subsalicylate, such as antacids, didanosine solution, quinapril, vitamins/minerals, dairy products (such as milk, yogurt), and calcium-enriched juice, as they can interfere with the absorption of doxycycline.

The dosage of doxycycline is determined based on the patient’s medical condition and response to treatment, with dosing for children taking weight into account. To achieve the best effect, patients should take this antibiotic at evenly spaced times and at the same time(s) every day to help with adherence.

Take the full prescribed amount of the medication until finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Discontinuing the medication prematurely may allow bacteria to grow and result in the return of the infection.
