Indications 

Vantin Dispersible is an antibiotic medication used to treat various bacterial infections, including infections of the sinuses, throat, ear, skin, bladder, and lungs. It is also used to treat gonorrhea. It contains the active ingredient cefpodoxime proxetil. It belongs to the class of medicines known as cephalosporin antibiotics.  

Cefpodoxime works by stopping the growth of bacteria or killing them, thus treating bacterial infections. When the medication is taken orally, it is absorbed into the bloodstream and reaches the site of infection. Once there, it inhibits the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, which is essential for the bacteria’s survival and growth. By disrupting the cell wall, Vantin Dispersible weakens the bacteria, making it easier for the immune system to eliminate them. 

Use and Dosage 

Cefpodoxime comes in the form of orally disintegrating tablet usually taken every 12 hours with food. It is typically taken orally with or without food. The dispersible tablets should be dissolved in water before taking. Place the tablet in a glass of water and allow it to disperse. Stir the mixture until the tablet is fully dissolved. Drink the entire mixture immediately after it has dissolved. You may also take it with food to help prevent stomach upset. Follow the instructions provided by your healthcare professional or the medication label for the correct dosage and duration of treatment. 

The dosage and duration of treatment will depend on the specific infection being treated and your individual circumstances. Take Vantin Dispersible exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than the recommended dose, and do not stop taking it unless instructed to do so. 

If you are using the medication for a long duration, continue taking it until you finish the full prescription, even if you start feeling better. Stopping the medication too soon may result in incomplete treatment and the bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics. Store the medication as directed by the manufacturer or your healthcare provider. Typically, it should be kept in a cool, dry place away from direct light and moisture.

• Rapid weight gain  
• Rash 
• Seizures (convulsions)

• Sore throat  
• Spinning sensation (vertigo)  
• Stiff or tight muscles  
• Stomach pain  
• Strange dreams, nightmares  
• Stuffy nose  
• Swelling  
• Tired feeling  
• Trouble breathing  
• Unusual bleeding or bruising  
• Unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth  
• Urinating less than usual or not all  
• Vaginal itching or discharge  
• Vomiting  
• Watery or bloody diarrhea  
• Watery or bloody stools, stomach cramps, or fever during treatment or for up to two or more months after stopping treatment 
• Wheezing 
• White patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips  
• Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice) 

Cautions 

• Allergic Reactions: Inform your doctor if you have had an allergic reaction to cefpodoxime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics, penicillin antibiotics, or any other medications. Disclose any allergies you may have to avoid potential adverse reactions. 
• Complete the Full Course: Complete the full prescribed course of Vantin Dispersible, even if you start feeling better. Stopping the medication too soon or skipping doses may result in incomplete treatment and the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. 
• Drug Interactions: Cefpodoxime may interact with other medications, including those that can decrease its absorption. Inform your healthcare professional about all the medications, vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies you are taking to avoid potential interactions. 
• Kidney or Liver Impairment: If you have a history of kidney or liver problems, inform your healthcare professional. Adjustments to the dosage or monitoring of kidney or liver function may be necessary. 
• Gastrointestinal Issues: Cefpodoxime can sometimes cause gastrointestinal side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain. If you experience severe or persistent diarrhea during or after treatment, contact your doctor, as it could be a sign of a more serious condition. 
• Prolonged Bleeding: Cefpodoxime may affect blood clotting factors and cause prolonged bleeding. Inform your doctor if you have a bleeding disorder or are taking medications that affect blood clotting, such as anticoagulants. 
• Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, discuss the potential risks and benefits of using cefpodoxime with your doctor. The medication may pass into breast milk and could potentially harm a nursing infant. 
• Severe Allergic Reactions: In rare cases, cefpodoxime can cause severe allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms like difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, rash, or itching. 
• Clostridium difficile Infection: Antibiotic use, including cefpodoxime, can sometimes lead to an overgrowth of bacteria called Clostridium difficile, which can cause a severe infection. Inform your doctor if you develop persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain, or fever during or after treatment.
