Description

Indications

Valacyclovir is an antiviral medication used to treat infections caused by certain types of viruses. It works by stopping the growth of the virus and reducing the severity and length of outbreaks. Valacyclovir is used to treat cold sores around the mouth, chickenpox, shingles, and episodes of genital herpes in adults. In children, it treats cold sores around the mouth and chickenpox.

Valacyclovir is not a cure for these infections, and the viruses that cause them continue to live in the body even between outbreaks. However, it can help to decrease the number of future episodes in people with frequent attacks. Valacyclovir can help to heal sores faster, prevent new sores from forming, and reduce pain and itching associated with these infections. It may reduce how long pain remains after the sores heal.

Uses and Dosage

The dosage and duration of treatment may vary depending on the type of infection and other individual factors. Valacyclovir may interact with other medications, so you must inform your doctor of all medicines you currently take.

Valacyclovir should be taken orally, with or without food, as per the instructions provided by your healthcare provider. Consuming ample fluids while taking this medication is recommended to minimize the likelihood of side effects.

The dose and duration of treatment are determined based on the type of infection, medical condition, and response to therapy. In the case of treating chickenpox in children, the dosage is influenced by the patient’s weight.

For shingles or chickenpox, this is advised to commence valacyclovir intake at the first symptom or as soon as possible after the rash surfaces. In case of cold sores or genital herpes, initiation of therapy should occur as soon as you experience tingling, itching, or burning, or at the first sign of an outbreak, as per your healthcare provider’s advice.
