Indications 

This medication is utilized in conjunction with other HIV treatments to manage the progression of HIV infection. Its mechanism of action involves reducing the viral load in the body, thereby enhancing the efficacy of the immune system. This treatment regimen significantly decreases the likelihood of developing HIV-associated complications, such as opportunistic infections and cancer, and improves overall quality of life. Comprised of two distinct agents, namely emtricitabine and tenofovir, this product belongs to the class of nucleoside and nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors, commonly referred to as NRTIs. 

Uses and Dosage 

Truvada is a pharmaceutical preparation that contains a combination of two antiviral agents, namely emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. These agents are known to effectively inhibit the proliferation of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the body. 

This medication is typically taken orally as directed by a physician, usually once daily, with or without food. The recommended dosage is determined by various factors, such as the patient’s kidney function, medical status, and response to treatment. For pediatric patients, the dosage is based on body weight. 

In the treatment of HIV infection, Truvada is generally administered in combination with other medications that combat HIV. If didanosine enteric-coated tablets are being taken, consume both drugs either on an empty stomach or with a light meal. On the other hand, if didanosine-buffered tablets are being taken, consume both drugs on an empty stomach. 

 Adhere to the prescribed dosage regimen of Truvada (and other HIV medications) as directed by the physician. Skipping doses can have adverse effects on the efficacy of treatment. 

To achieve the best possible therapeutic outcome, take this medication at evenly spaced intervals. To facilitate adherence, patients should take Truvada at the same time every day. 

Side Effects 

Patients taking this medication may experience adverse effects such as:  

• Diarrhea 
• Headache 
• Dizziness 
• Difficulty sleeping 
• Back pain 
• Changes in skin color on the palms or soles of the feet 

If any of these side effects persist or worsen, notify the treating physician or pharmacist. 

Keep in mind that this medication has been prescribed by the physician because they have determined that the benefits of treatment outweigh the potential risks of side effects. Note that many individuals using this medication do not experience any serious side effects.

Cautions 

Prior to initiating emtricitabine/tenofovir therapy, inform the physician or pharmacist about any known allergies to either medication or any other substances. Before using this medication, patients are encouraged to disclose their medical history to their physician or pharmacist, particularly if they have a history of pancreatitis, liver problems (such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, cirrhosis), alcohol use, bone problems (including bone disease, bone loss/osteoporosis, weak/broken bones), or kidney disease.
