Indications
Toviaz is a medication approved for the treatment of two conditions affecting the bladder.
Overactive bladder (OAB) in adults with symptoms of urge urinary incontinence, urgency, and frequency. Neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) in pediatric patients aged 6 years and older with a body weight greater than 25 kg.
Fesoterodine is indicated for the treatment of overactive bladder and neurogenic detrusor overactivity, conditions that affect bladder storage and control, and are characterized by symptoms such as frequent urination, strong sudden urges to urinate, and incontinence. Fesoterodine works by relaxing the muscles in the bladder, thereby improving the patient’s ability to control urination.
Uses and Dosage
Take this medication orally once a day with or without food as instructed by your doctor. Swallow the tablets whole with a full glass of liquid and avoid crushing or chewing them, as this may lead to adverse reactions due to sudden drug release.
The dosage of the medication depends on your medical condition, other ongoing treatments, and response to the medication. inform your doctor and pharmacist about any products you are using, including prescription, and nonprescription drugs, and herbal products. For children, the dosage may depend on their body weight.
Side Effects
Common side effects of this medication include:
- Dry mouth
- Dry eyes
- Constipation
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Blurred vision
If any of these side effects persist or worsen, promptly inform your doctor or pharmacist.
To alleviate dry mouth, suck on (sugarless) hard candy or ice chips, chew (sugarless) gum, drink water, or use a saliva substitute.
To prevent constipation, consume dietary fiber, drink adequate water, and exercise regularly. You may need to use a laxative, and your pharmacist can assist you in choosing the appropriate one.
Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because they have assessed that the benefits outweigh the risks of potential side effects. Most individuals who use this medication do not experience serious side effects.

Prior to taking fesoterodine, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have any allergies to this medication, tolterodine, or any other substances. Before using this medication, make sure to tell your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history, particularly if you have a history of problems emptying your bladder (urinary retention, bladder outflow obstruction), severe blockage of the stomach or intestines (gastric obstruction/retention), stomach/intestinal disease (such as ulcerative colitis, slowed movement of stomach/intestines), a specific eye condition called narrow-angle glaucoma, severe constipation, kidney disease, liver disease, or a certain muscle disease known as myasthenia gravis.
