Uses and Dosage
To use this medication, take it orally as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. It can be taken with or without food. However, do not crush or chew extended-release tablets as it can release the entire drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects. Do not split extended-release tablets unless they have a score line and your doctor or pharmacist instructs you to do so. Swallow the tablet whole or split without crushing or chewing. To minimize the risk of side effects, your doctor may start with a low dose and gradually increase the dosage. Cautions
Prior to taking metoprolol, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have to this medication or other beta-blockers, as well as any other allergies you may have. This medication may contain inactive ingredients that could potentially cause allergic reactions or other issues. Discuss your concerns with your pharmacist for more information.
Provide your doctor or pharmacist with your medical history before using this medication, specifically if you have a history of certain types of heart rhythm problems, breathing problems such as asthma or chronic bronchitis, liver disease, severe allergic reactions requiring treatment with epinephrine, blood circulation problems, mental or mood disorders such as depression, or a specific muscle disease known as myasthenia gravis.
Metoprolol has the potential to cause dizziness or drowsiness. Using alcohol or marijuana can exacerbate these effects. Until you are certain that you can do so safely, you should avoid activities that require alertness, such as driving or operating machinery. Limit or avoid alcohol consumption, and discuss your use of marijuana with your doctor.
If you are scheduled for surgery, inform your surgeon or dentist about all of the medications and herbal supplements you are taking, including prescription and non-prescription drugs.
Individuals with diabetes should be aware that this medication may mask the usual symptoms of a fast or pounding heartbeat that may occur when blood sugar drops too low. Symptoms such as sweating and dizziness are not affected by this medication. It may make it harder to control blood sugar levels. Check your blood sugar levels regularly as directed and report any signs of high blood sugar to your doctor, such as increased thirst or urination. Your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes medication, exercise regimen, or diet.
