Indications 

Tegretol Chewables are a prescription medication primarily used for the treatment of seizures associated with epilepsy. It helps reduce the spread of seizure activity in the brain, thereby helping to prevent seizures. They can also be prescribed to manage nerve pain, particularly trigeminal neuralgia, by calming overactive nerves in the body. 

Tegretol Chewables, which contain the active ingredient carbamazepine. Carbamazepine is classified as an anticonvulsant or anti-epileptic drug. Carbamazepine works by stabilizing the electrical activity in the brain and nerves, reducing the occurrence of seizures, and providing relief from certain types of nerve pain. 

Use and Dosage 

Carbamazepine comes as a chewable tablet taken by mouth to take usually taken two to four times a day with meals. It is intended to be chewed thoroughly before swallowing. This allows for better absorption of the medication. They can be taken with or without food, as directed by your doctor. 

The recommended dosage of Carbamazepine Chewable Tablets can vary depending on the condition being treated, the patient’s age and weight, and other factors.  

• The usual starting dose for adults with epilepsy is typically 200 milligrams (mg) twice a day, which may be increased as needed based on the individual’s response and tolerance.  
• For adults with epilepsy, the recommended starting dose is typically 200 milligrams (mg) twice a day, which may be increased as needed up to a maintenance dose of 800 to 1200 mg per day. For nerve pain, the recommended dosage is 600 mg to 800 mg per day. In the treatment of bipolar disorder, the recommended dosage is 400 mg to 600 mg per day.  
• For children, the dosage may be based on their weight and age. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose of 1200 mg/day. Additionally, because the chewable tablets may have different effects on blood levels than the same dose given as a tablet, start with a low dose and increase gradually as needed. 

Take Tegretol Chewables as prescribed by your doctor. Take Tegretol Chewables at the same time(s) each day to maintain a consistent level of the medication in your system. This can help maximize its effectiveness. Stopping the medication abruptly can lead to a recurrence of seizures or other symptoms. Tegretol Chewables should not be stopped suddenly without consulting your healthcare provider. Abruptly discontinuing the medication can lead to an increase in seizures or other withdrawal symptoms.

Serious Side Effects 

• Confusion 
• Dark urine 
• Difficulty swallowing or breathing 
• Fast, slow, or pounding heartbeat; shortness of breath, dizziness, or fainting 
• Fatigue 
• Headache, new or increased number of seizures, difficulty concentrating, confusion, weakness, or unsteadiness 
• Loss of appetite 
• Nausea 
• Pain on the right side of your stomach area 
• Rash 
• Severe rash with one or more of the following: fever, muscle or joint aches, red or swollen eyes, blisters or peeling skin, mouth sores, or swelling of your face or neck 
• Swelling of your face, eyes, eyelids, lips, or tongue 
• Swollen glands 
• Vision changes 
• Vomiting 
• Yellowing of the skin or eyes 

Cautions 

• Tegretol Chewables may affect blood cells and can lead to serious blood disorders. Regular blood tests may be required to monitor your blood cell count. 
• Carbamazepine can affect liver function. Regular liver function tests may be necessary to monitor for any potential liver problems. 
• Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to Tegretol Chewables. Seek medical attention immediately if you develop symptoms such as rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing. 
• Tegretol Chewables can interact with other medications, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, and prescription medications. Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions. 
• Tegretol Chewables may cause drowsiness and dizziness. Avoid activities that require alertness, such as driving or operating heavy machinery, until you know how the medication affects you. 
• Tegretol Chewables may pose risks during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Consult with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. 
• Carbamazepine can affect mood and may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior. Monitor your mental health and inform your healthcare provider if you experience any changes in mood or behavior.
