Cautions
Before initiating carbamazepine therapy, disclose to your healthcare provider or pharmacist any allergies you have, specifically to carbamazepine or other anticonvulsant medications like phenobarbital, phenytoin, primidone, fosphenytoin, oxcarbazepine, and tricyclic antidepressants such as desipramine and amitriptyline. This product may contain inactive constituents, such as sorbitol in the suspension, which can cause allergic reactions or other medical issues. Consult with your pharmacist for further details.
Prior to using this medication, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist of your medical history, primarily if you have a history of decreased bone marrow function (bone marrow depression), blood disorders like porphyria or anemia, glaucoma, heart disease, such as coronary artery disease, irregular heartbeat, or heart failure, kidney disease, liver disease, mental/mood disorders like depression, and mineral imbalances such as low levels of sodium or calcium in the blood.
This medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing tasks that require alertness until you can do so safely. Furthermore, alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can increase the risk of dizziness or drowsiness. Consult your healthcare provider if you are using marijuana (cannabis).
This medication can increase your sensitivity to the sun. ; Limit your exposure to sunlight, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, use sunscreen, and wear protective clothing when you are outside. Seek medical assistance right away if you develop sunburn or skin blisters/redness.
Elderly patients may be more susceptible to the side effects of this drug, especially confusion, unsteadiness, or irregular heartbeat. Confusion and unsteadiness can increase the risk of falling. Older adults may have a higher risk of developing low levels of sodium in the blood (a type of mineral imbalance), especially when taking “water pills” (diuretics).
During pregnancy, carbamazepine should only be used when deemed necessary by your healthcare provider.
