Synvisc is intended for addressing knee pain associated with osteoarthritis (OA) in patients unresponsive to alternative interventions like exercise, physical therapy, and basic analgesics such as acetaminophen. 

Derived from chicken combs, Hylan G-F 20 resembles the synovial fluid enveloping body joints. Its potential function involves lubrication and shock absorption within the joint, facilitating seamless knee movement and subsequently reducing discomfort. 

Uses and Dosage 

Before the administration of Synvisc and with every prescription refill, carefully read the patient information leaflet furnished by your healthcare provider. Should you have any inquiries, kindly consult your physician or pharmacist. 

The prescribed dosage of this medication depends on the patient’s medical condition and treatment response. 

Typically, Synvisc is administered via direct injection into the affected knee joint by a healthcare professional once every week until you have received 3 injections. 

Prior to medication administration, your doctor might perform joint fluid removal if necessary.  

Following the Synvisc injection, refrain from activities that exert pressure on your knee, such as jogging, tennis, heavy lifting, or prolonged standing, for 48 hours. 

Moreover, after receiving the injection, you might encounter initial knee pain and swelling escalation. Should these symptoms persist or intensify, promptly consult your physician. 

Side Effects 

Listed below are the potential adverse effects of Synvisc. Notify your doctor promptly if any of them persist or worsen. 

Common Side Effects 

• Pain, swelling, redness/warmth/bruising at the injection site 
• Headache 

Serious Side Effects 

• Back pain 
• Severe headache 
• Fast/pounding heartbeat 
• Fever 
• Tingling skin 

Tell your doctor right away if any of the serious side effects above are experienced. 

Allergic Reactions 

Although rare, a severe allergic reaction to Synvisc may occur. Seek prompt medical attention in case of any signs of an allergic reaction, such as: 

• Rash 
• Itching/swelling (particularly of face/tongue/throat) 
• Severe dizziness 
• Difficulty breathing 

Not all side effects of Synvisc are included in this list. Notify your doctor if any unlisted effects occur. 

Cautions 

Before starting treatment with Synvisc, inform your doctor if you have any known allergies, particularly to hyaluronan, avian proteins, feathers, egg products, or other medicines. 

Consult your pharmacist for more details about Synvisc, as it may contain inactive ingredients that may trigger allergic reactions or other complications. 

To ensure Synvisc is safe for you, disclose to your physician your medical background, especially if you have a history of: 

• Knee joint infections 
• Skin infections/problems around the injection site area 
• Circulation problems in the legs 

Synvisc can interact with other drugs, including prescription and non-prescription medications, vitamins, and herbal products. Inform all your healthcare providers about your current medication use and any changes you make. 

The potential effects of hylan G-F 20 on fetal development are currently unknown. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to conceive. 

The transfer of hylan G-F 20 into breast milk and its potential effects on a nursing infant are not established. If you are currently breastfeeding, inform your doctor.
