Indications 

Skelaxin, known as metaxalone, belongs to the class of skeletal muscle relaxants and is indicated for the treatment of symptoms associated with skeletal muscle conditions, including pain and injury. 

Its mechanism of action is believed to involve the inhibition of nerve impulses or pain sensations in the brain. Skelaxin is typically administered concomitantly with rest and physical therapy for optimal therapeutic benefit. 

Uses and Dosage 

Administer this medication orally, with or without food, in accordance with your physician’s directives. Do not exceed the prescribed dose or frequency of administration, as this will not expedite symptom relief and may heighten the likelihood of adverse effects.  

Should you encounter side effects after consuming a high-fat meal, it may be advisable to ingest this medication on an empty stomach or after a light repast.

To forestall the emergence of a potentially severe hypertensive reaction, adhere to a specialized dietary plan prescribed by your doctor or dietician, restricting your intake of tyramine while consuming this medication.  

You should refrain from consuming foods and beverages with high tyramine content, including aged cheeses, cured or aged meats and sausages (e.g., salami, liverwurst), pickled fish (e.g., herring), yeast-heavy items (e.g., bouillon cubes, dehydrated soup/gravy mixes, homemade or sourdough bread), fermented foods (e.g., sauerkraut, kimchi), most soybean products (e.g., soy sauce, tofu), broad or fava beans, red wine, sherry, draft beer, and vermouth. Side Effects 

Allergic Reactions

Signs of an allergic reaction to Skelaxin requiring immediate emergency medical attention: 

• Hives 
• Difficult breathing 
• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat 

Severe Side Effects

Stop using Skelaxin and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following: 

• Weak or shallow breathing 
• A light-headed feeling or dizziness that may cause fainting 
• Pale or yellowed skin, dark urine, fever, confusion, or weakness 
• Upper stomach pain, loss of appetite, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) 

Common Side Effects 

• Dizziness 
• Drowsiness 
• Nausea, vomiting, or upset stomach 
• Headache 
• Feeling nervous or irritable 

Caution

Older individuals may be more susceptible to the side effects of this medication, particularly dizziness, drowsiness, or confusion, which may increase the likelihood of falls. 

If you are pregnant, only use this medication if necessary by your doctor, after considering the potential risks and benefits.
