Description
Indications
Seroquel (quetiapine) is an atypical antipsychotic medication for the treatment of bipolar disorder, manic episodes, depression, and schizophrenia in individuals aged 10 years and older.
This prescription drug functions by acting on dopamine, a neurotransmitter in the brain that regulates movement, thoughts, emotions, arousal, and reward. Too much dopamine in the brain can lead to several symptoms, including manic episodes in individuals with schizophrenia.
Seroquel counteracts this effect by blocking certain brain regions where dopamine acts and reducing its overactivity, thus calming the brain. Moreover, Seroquel blocks serotonin, another brain chemical that is involved in mood, balance, and memory regulation.
Too much serotonin can trigger schizophrenia symptoms, depression, and movement control issues. Seroquel balances these neurotransmitters in the brain to alleviate psychotic episodes and depression symptoms.
Uses and Dosage
Before taking quetiapine, read and understand the medication guide and patient information leaflet provided by your pharmacist. If you have any questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually 2 or 3 times daily with or without food. For depression associated with bipolar disorder, take this medication once daily at bedtime.
The dosage is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking. Inform your doctor and pharmacist of all the products you use, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products.
Your doctor may instruct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase it to reduce the risk of side effects. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully and take this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it.
Do not increase your dose or use this drug more often or for longer than prescribed. Doing so will not improve your condition faster, but instead, it will increase your risk of side effects.
