Indications 

Sensipar is a medication that effectively reduces the levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcium, and phosphorus in the body.  

Its primary therapeutic indication is for the treatment of hyperparathyroidism, a condition characterized by the overactive functioning of the parathyroid glands in patients undergoing long-term dialysis for kidney disease.  

Sensipar is utilized in the management of hypercalcemia, a medical condition manifested by abnormally high levels of calcium in the blood, in individuals diagnosed with parathyroid gland cancer or overactive parathyroid glands that are not amenable to surgical intervention. 

Uses and Dosage 

Consume this medication orally with food or soon after a meal, in strict accordance with the instructions provided by your healthcare provider.  

The manufacturer advises against dividing, masticating, or pulverizing the tablet prior to ingestion, although several analogous immediate-release tablets can be fragmented, chewed, or crushed.

Side Effects 

Allergic Reactions 

• Hives 
• Difficulty breathing 
• Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat 
• Seek immediate medical attention if these symptoms occur 

Severe Side Effects

Serious side effects that require urgent medical attention: 

• Numbness or tingling sensation around the mouth 
• Muscle pain, tightness, or contraction 
• Seizures (convulsions) 
• Shortness of breath, swelling, rapid weight gain (even with mild exertion) 
• Signs of stomach bleeding – bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds 
• Low levels of calcium in your blood – numbness or tingling feeling around your mouth, fast or slow heart rate, muscle tightness or contraction, overactive reflexes 

Contact your physician immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.

• Nausea and vomiting 
• Headache and fatigue 
• Diarrhea 
• Low blood pressure 
• Decreased appetite 
• Tingling sensation in the arms, hands, legs, or feet 

Caution 

Prior to initiating cinacalcet treatment, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist of any known hypersensitivity reactions to the drug or any other allergies. This medication may contain inactive constituents that have the potential to provoke allergic reactions or other untoward effects. seek further information from your pharmacist regarding the medication. 

Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your healthcare provider or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of hypocalcemia, seizures, or gastrointestinal issues such as ulcers, gastritis, and heartburn. 

Notably, cinacalcet may lead to extremely low levels of calcium in the bloodstream, which can cause irregular heartbeats such as QT prolongation and ventricular arrhythmias.  

Individuals who have pre-existing cardiac issues or are using other medications that can alter the heart rhythm may have an increased risk of experiencing these complications. Notify your healthcare provider of all the medications you are taking, as well as any pre-existing cardiac issues such as heart failure and hypotension. 

In the event of planned surgery, inform your physician or dentist of all products you are using, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal supplements. 

During pregnancy, this medication should only be used when absolutely necessary. Discuss the potential benefits and risks with your healthcare provider before initiating treatment.
