Before initiating risperidone therapy, inform your healthcare provider of any known hypersensitivity to this medication, paliperidone, or any other allergies. This medication may contain inactive ingredients that could trigger an allergic reaction or other adverse effects. Consult with your pharmacist to obtain further information on this matter.
Risperidone may cause QT prolongation, a condition that affects the heart rhythm, which may result in fast/irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, fainting, or other symptoms that require urgent medical attention. The risk of QT prolongation may be elevated in patients with specific medical conditions or those taking medications that can cause QT prolongation.
Inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist of all drugs you are taking and if you have certain heart problems, a family history of such problems, or a prolonged QT interval in the EKG before initiating risperidone therapy.
This medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Alcohol or marijuana use may exacerbate these effects. Therefore, refrain from driving, operating machinery, or performing tasks that require alertness until you can do so safely. Avoid alcoholic beverages, and if you are using marijuana, consult your healthcare provider.
This medication may decrease sweating, which may increase the likelihood of heat stroke. To minimize the risk of overheating, avoid activities that could cause overheating, such as strenuous exercise in hot weather or using hot tubs. Ensure that you stay hydrated during hot weather, dress lightly, and take breaks to cool down if you overheat. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience a fever that does not subside, mental/mood changes, headache, or dizziness.
As untreated mental/mood problems, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or depression, can have severe consequences, do not discontinue this medication unless directed by your healthcare provider. If you are planning to become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, consult your healthcare provider immediately to discuss the risks and benefits of using this medication during pregnancy.
