Drug Description

Indications

Relafen is categorized as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and functions by diminishing the production of hormones that trigger inflammation and pain in the body. This medication is indicated for alleviating symptoms associated with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Uses and Dosage

Prior to initiating the use of nabumetone, carefully read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist, and repeat this process each time you obtain a refill. Should you have any inquiries, seek guidance from your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this medication orally, usually once or twice daily, with a complete glass of water (8 ounces or 240 milliliters), as instructed by your physician. After taking this medication, refrain from lying down for a minimum of 10 minutes. To avoid stomach irritation, consume the medication with food, milk, or an antacid.

The prescribed dose of this medication is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. To minimize the possibility of adverse effects, including stomach bleeding, utilize the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible duration of time.

Do not exceed the prescribed dosage or increase the frequency of administration without consulting your physician. For prolonged conditions such as arthritis, continue taking the medication as directed by your doctor. Before using this medication, consult your physician or pharmacist to discuss the benefits and risks.

In certain conditions, such as arthritis, it may require up to two weeks of regular usage before experiencing the full benefits of this drug.

If you are consuming this medication on an “as needed” basis rather than a regular schedule, keep in mind that pain medication is most effective when taken at the onset of symptoms. If you delay medication usage until the pain has intensified, the medication may not provide the desired results.

Caution

Relafen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, has potential risks and should be used with caution. Prolonged use or high doses of this medication or its use by those with heart disease can increase the risk of fatal heart attack or stroke. Taking Relafen just before or after heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG) is not recommended.

Stomach or intestinal bleeding is another potential risk of using Relafen, and this can be fatal, especially among older adults. These conditions can occur without warning while taking the medication.

If you experience symptoms of bleeding in your stomach or intestines, including black, bloody, or tarry stools or vomiting that looks like coffee grounds, contact your doctor immediately.

When using Relafen, avoid drinking alcohol, as it can increase the risk of stomach bleeding caused by nabumetone.

Avoid exposure to sunlight or artificial UV rays (such as sunlamps or tanning beds) as Relafen can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, leading to sunburn.

Do not use any other over-the-counter cold, allergy, or pain medication without first consulting your doctor or pharmacist, as many of these medications contain aspirin or other drugs that are similar to Relafen (such as ibuprofen, ketoprofen, or naproxen).

Accidentally taking too much of this type of medication can be harmful. Before using any other medication, check its label to see if it contains aspirin, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, or naproxen.
