Indications 

Proscar is a medication that inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT plays a role in the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). 

Proscar is indicated for the management of symptoms associated with BPH in men with an enlarged prostate. Finasteride, the active ingredient in Proscar, should only be used by men and should never be taken by women or children. 

In addition to treating BPH symptoms, Proscar may be used to lower the risk of urinary retention and the need for surgery related to BPH in men with an enlarged prostate. 

Proscar may be used alone or in combination with doxazosin, an alpha-blocker medication, to achieve optimal management of BPH symptoms. 

Uses and Dosage 

Prior to taking finasteride, read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist, before the start of medication and each time you get a refill. Should you have any questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist. 

Take this medication orally, with or without food, as per your doctor’s directions, usually once a day. 

Since this drug can be absorbed via the skin and lungs, and may cause harm to an unborn baby, women who are pregnant or might become pregnant should avoid handling this medication or inhaling dust from the tablets. It could lead to abnormal sex organ development in an unborn male infant. 

To reap the maximum benefits from this medication, use it consistently and at the same time each day. Do not discontinue taking this medication without consulting your doctor as it may take 6 to 12 months to observe any improvement in your condition. Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or deteriorates. 

Side Effects 

Allergic Reactions

If you experience signs of an allergic reaction to Proscar, seek immediate medical help. These signs may include: 

• Hives 
• Difficulty breathing 
• Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat 

Severe Side Effects

Notify your doctor without delay if you notice any signs of male breast cancer, such as: 

• Breast pain or lumps 
• Nipple discharge 
• Any other breast changes 

Inform your doctor immediately if you experience: 

• Blood in your semen 
• Pain in your testicles 
• Depression 

Use of finasteride may make it difficult for you to impregnate a woman. 

Common Side Effects  

• Decreased interest in sex 
• Trouble getting or maintaining an erection 
• Trouble achieving orgasm 
• Abnormal ejaculation 
• Breast swelling or tenderness 

The sexual side effects of finasteride may persist even after discontinuing the medication. If you have any concerns about these side effects, consult your doctor. 

Caution 

Prior to taking finasteride, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have allergies to it or any other substances. This medication may contain inactive components that could trigger allergic reactions or other issues. Seek further information from your pharmacist. 

Inform your doctor or pharmacist of your medical history, particularly if you have liver disease, prostate cancer, infections, or urinary issues before taking this medication. 

If you are planning to undergo surgery, make sure to notify your dentist or doctor of all the products you are currently using, including herbal supplements, prescription drugs, and non-prescription medications. 

Finasteride is not intended for use in women, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It could pose a risk to a developing fetus or a nursing infant. If you have questions regarding this medication, please consult your physician.
