Drug Description

Indications

Preparation H Ointment is indicated to relieve internal and external hemorrhoidal discomfort.

Formulated with yeast extract called bio dyne, Preparation H ointment effectively alleviates discomfort by reducing swelling in hemorrhoidal tissue and relieving pain, itching, and irritation.

Uses and Dosage

Before using Preparation H Ointment, and every time you get a refill, carefully review its medication guide and patient information leaflet. If you have any inquiries or concerns, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Preparation H ointment is intended for rectal use only and should not be taken orally.

Typically, this ointment can be applied freely up to four times (in the morning, at night, and after each bowel movement) or as prescribed by a doctor.

To properly apply Preparation H ointment, follow these steps:

  1. Before use, attempt to empty your bowel and bladder.
  2. Clean the affected area with mild soap and water, ensuring a thorough rinse, and gently pat it dry.
  3. Wash your hands before applying the ointment.
  4. Attach the applicator to the tube and remove its protective cover.
  5. Lubricate the applicator by squeezing some ointment to the tip of your finger and then spread it to the end of the applicator.
  6. Lie on your side comfortably with your bottom leg extended and your top leg bent towards your stomach.
  7. Lift your but cheeks and gently insert the applicator into the rectum, about ½ inch.
  8. Squeeze the tube to apply the ointment inside the rectum.
  9. Hold your buttocks together for five seconds and try to remain still for 5 minutes.
  10. After each use, cleanse the applicator thoroughly with warm water and mild soap, then rinse it thoroughly and replace the protective cover.

To allow Preparation H Ointment to work effectively, avoid having a bowel movement for one to three hours after application.

Do not use this medication more often or longer than recommended on the package insert or as directed by your doctor.

Consult your doctor if your condition persists or if bleeding occurs.
