Description
Indications
Prednisolone is a corticosteroid that exhibits potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. By simulating the activity of cortisol, a hormone naturally produced by the adrenal glands to regulate metabolism and stress, Prednisolone serves to mitigate inflammatory responses and curb the overactivity of the immune system.
This medication effectively curbs the release of substances in the body responsible for eliciting inflammation, rendering it a versatile agent in the management of a wide array of inflammatory conditions, including arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, ulcerative colitis, allergic disorders, glandular disorders, and various dermatologic, pulmonary, neurologic, and hematologic conditions.
Prednisolone’s glucocorticoid activity predominates over its mineralocorticoid activity, meaning its mechanism of action primarily targets the immune response and inflammation without interfering with the body’s electrolyte and water balance.
Uses and Dosage
To ensure optimal therapeutic benefit, take this medication orally with food or milk to avoid gastric irritation, as directed by your physician. Unless instructed otherwise, consume a full glass of water (8 ounces/240 milliliters) along with your medication.
Comply with the dosing schedule meticulously, as the prescribed dose and duration of treatment depend on your medical condition and response to the medication. Your healthcare provider may recommend prednisolone administration 1 to 4 times per day or instruct you to take a single dose every other day.
To enhance adherence to the prescribed regimen, consider marking your calendar or utilizing a pillbox. If using the prednisolone dose pack, adhere to the dosing schedule as indicated on the package, unless otherwise advised by your physician.
Discontinuation of prednisolone therapy should only be undertaken after consulting your healthcare provider, as abrupt cessation may exacerbate certain medical conditions. Your dosage may need to be gradually reduced to minimize the risk of withdrawal symptoms, such as muscle pain, headache, weight loss, dizziness, weakness, tiredness, or nausea.
Withdrawal symptoms are more likely to occur after prolonged or high-dose prednisolone administration. Notify your doctor or pharmacist immediately if you experience withdrawal symptoms. Refer to the Precautions section for further guidance.
