Persantine is a prescription medicine utilized in conjunction with other drugs to mitigate the likelihood of blood clots following heart valve replacement. 

As an antiplatelet medication, Persantine aids in maintaining smooth blood flow by preventing platelets from sticking together and by keeping the heart’s blood vessels open. 

Uses and Dosage 

Before taking Persantine and with each prescription refill, carefully review its medication guide and patient information leaflet. Ask your healthcare provider if you have any questions or uncertainties. 

The dosage of Persantine is determined based on the patient’s medical condition and response to the treatment. 

Typically, Persantine is taken four times daily, as prescribed by the doctor. 

For optimal results, take this medication exactly as directed at a consistent time each day. Refrain from altering the dosage, frequency, or duration of intake without your doctor’s approval. 

Keep taking Persantine, even if you are feeling well. Refrain from discontinuing its use without consulting your doctor. 

Side Effects 

Listed below are the potential adverse effects of Persantine. If any of them persist or worsen, notify your physician promptly. 

Common Side Effects 

• Headache 
• Dizziness 
• Rash 
• Upset stomach 

Serious Side Effects 

• Light-headed feeling with the potential of fainting 
• Chest pain 
• Signs of liver problems:  
  • Upper stomach pain 
  • Itching 
  • Loss of appetite 
  • Dark urine 
  • Clay-colored stools 
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) 

Inform your doctor right away if you experience any of the severe side effects listed above. 

Allergic Reactions 

Although rare, a severe allergic reaction to Persantine may occur. Seek immediate medical attention if any signs of a severe allergic reaction are observed, such as: 

• Hives 
• Difficulty breathing 
• Swelling, particularly of the face, lips, tongue, or throat 

Not all side effects of Persantine are included in this list. Notify your physician right away if any unlisted effects occur. 

Cautions 

Before starting treatment with Persantine, inform your doctor of any known allergies, particularly to dipyridamole or other medications. 

Consult your pharmacist for more information, as Persantine may contain inactive substances that could potentially trigger allergies or other complications. 

To ensure Persantine is safe for you, disclose to your physician your medical background, especially if you have a history of: 

• Other heart problems like severe coronary artery disease or recent heart attack 
• Low blood pressure (hypotension) 
• Liver disease 
• Specific muscle condition (myasthenia gravis) 

Inform all your healthcare providers about any current or newly initiated or discontinued medications, including prescription and non-prescription drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements, to reduce the risk of drug interaction with Persantine. 

Some of the medications that may interact with Persantine include: 

• Riociguat 
• Other antiplatelet drugs (e.g., abciximab, ticlopidine) 

If you are taking aspirin, promptly consult your doctor to determine if you should continue it with Persantine. If you plan to start taking aspirin, seek advice from your doctor beforehand. 

When used alongside certain “blood thinners” like heparin or warfarin, Persantine can elevate the risk of bleeding. Adhere to your doctor’s instructions and maintain your prescribed medication regimen. If you experience any unusual bleeding, promptly inform your doctor. 

Persantine can disrupt specific medical or laboratory examinations, including chemical stress tests employing adenosine or dipyridamole, leading to potentially inaccurate test outcomes. Inform laboratory personnel and all treating physicians about your use of this medication. 

Persantine has the potential to induce dizziness, which can be exacerbated by the consumption of alcohol or marijuana (cannabis). Limit the intake of alcoholic beverages, discuss with your doctor your use of marijuana, and refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness until you can do so safely.  

Persantine should only be utilized when necessary during pregnancy. Consult your doctor to evaluate this medication’s potential risks and benefits before use. 

Seek medical advice before breastfeeding, as dipyridamole can be transferred through breast milk.
