Indications
Pepto Bismol is an over-the-counter medication frequently used for the management of intermittent symptoms of uncomplicated gastrointestinal problems, including indigestion, heartburn, and diarrhea.
Pepto-Bismol functions as an antacid to decrease excessive stomach acid and thereby alleviate discomfort. Additionally, it serves to safeguard the stomach and esophagus from the effects of stomach acid.
Uses and Dosage
To ensure the safe and effective use of this medicine, follow the instructions on the label or as prescribed by your doctor.
If taking the oral suspension, shake it before measuring the dose with the syringe provided or a medicine dose-measuring device, not a kitchen spoon. While taking this medicine, drink plenty of liquids.
Do not exceed 8 doses within 24 hours, and if you still experience diarrhea after 2 days of treatment, contact your doctor immediately. Inform any healthcare provider who may conduct medical tests that you are taking bismuth subsalicylate as it can affect test results.
Store this medicine at room temperature and away from moisture and heat. Avoid freezing it.
Side Effects
Allergic Reactions
If you experience signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical help immediately. Symptoms include:
- Hives
- Difficulty breathing
- Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat
Severe Side Effects
Contact your doctor immediately and discontinue use of the medicine if you experience any of the following:
- Changes in behavior accompanied by nausea and vomiting
- Hearing loss or ringing in your ears
- Diarrhea that lasts longer than two days
- Worsened stomach symptoms
While taking bismuth subsalicylate, be aware that it can cause your tongue to turn black or darken. This is a harmless side effect.
Common Side Effects

Caution
Before using Pepto-Bismol, take certain precautions to ensure your safety. You should refrain from using Pepto-Bismol if you have bleeding problems, blood in your stools, or if you are allergic to aspirin or other salicylates.
Pepto-Bismol should only be used for a stomach ulcer if the ulcer is caused by H. pylori and a doctor has prescribed Pepto-Bismol as part of modified bismuth-containing quadruple therapy (mBCQT).
Avoid giving this medication to a child or teenager with a fever, flu symptoms, or chickenpox. Individuals with gout or diabetes should consult their doctor before using the medication.
People may experience reactions to other inactive ingredients in the medication, and should therefore check all ingredients before using the product. While Pepto Bismol is generally safe when used correctly, it can still cause overdose. Signs of an overdose include:
- Extreme dizziness
- Ringing in ears
- Partial deafness
- Changes in breathing
- Mental fog or confusion
- Seizures
