Description

Indications

Parlodel is a prescribed medication indicated for alleviating symptoms associated with hyperprolactinemia (a hormonal imbalance characterized by an excessive amount of prolactin in the bloodstream), such as unwanted breast milk, irregular menstrual cycles, fertility challenges, reduced sperm count, and impaired sexual function.

Parlodel is also indicated for the treatment of hyperprolactinemia resulting from specific prolactin-producing tumors, with the potential to induce tumor shrinkage.

Furthermore, Parlodel is occasionally utilized in conjunction with surgical or radiation procedures to address acromegaly (excessive growth hormone) and to alleviate symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease, including rigidity, tremors, muscle spasms, and impaired motor control.

Classified as an ergot derivative with strong dopamine receptor agonist properties, Parlodel exerts its therapeutic effects by reducing prolactin levels to manage hyperprolactinemia, lowering growth hormone levels to address acromegaly, and stimulating movement-controlling nerves to treat Parkinson’s disease.

Uses and Dosage

Before taking Parlodel, and with each prescription refill, carefully review its medication guide and patient information leaflet. Consult your physician or pharmacist if you have any queries or concerns.

The dosage of Parlodel depends on the patient’s medical condition and response to treatment. In cases of acromegaly, growth hormone levels are also considered.

To minimize the risks of side effects, your doctor may advise starting with a low dose and gradually increasing it. Carefully follow your doctor’s instructions.

Typically, Parlodel is taken once or twice daily with food, as directed by the doctor. Take it consistently at around the same time each day to optimize its effectiveness.

Seek medical advice before discontinuing Parlodel. Abrupt cessation of this medication may worsen certain conditions and may also lead to withdrawal symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, confusion, fever, and muscle stiffness. Your doctor is likely to reduce your dosage gradually.

Notify all healthcare providers about any current or newly initiated or discontinued medications, including prescription/non-prescription drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements, as they may interact with Parlodel.

Some of the products that may interact with Parlodel include:

  • Antipsychotic drugs (e.g., chlorpromazine, haloperidol, thioridazine)
  • Other ergot medications (e.g., ergotamine)

Even if you feel awake, you may experience sudden bouts of sleepiness. Inform your doctor about any issues related to daytime drowsiness or sleepiness.

If you experience heightened sexual urges, atypical urges to gamble, or other intense urges during Parlodel treatment, discuss this with your doctor.

During pregnancy, a pituitary tumor in the mother may grow, and high blood pressure can also arise. This medication may pose risks if taken by a pregnant woman with high blood pressure.

Parlodel is sometimes prescribed to women to regulate menstrual cycles and enhance fertility. Inform your doctor promptly upon becoming pregnant. Depending on individual circumstances, discontinuation of Parlodel may be necessary.

If Parlodel is not being used for fertility purposes, the use of a barrier method of contraception (e.g., condom, diaphragm, cervical cap, or contraceptive sponge) to prevent pregnancy throughout the course of treatment is recommended. Regular pregnancy tests every 4 weeks during the treatment are also advised.
