CautionsÂ
- Starting Ovral Lo 28-day: For the first cycle of use, use an additional form of non-hormonal birth control (such as condoms or spermicide) for the first 7 days to prevent pregnancy. Â
- Interactions with Other Medications: Ovral Lo 28-day may interact with certain medications, such as antibiotics, anticonvulsants, antifungals, and HIV medications. These interactions can reduce the effectiveness of Ovral Lo 28-day or increase the risk of side effects. Â
- Non-Hormonal Backup Method: In certain situations, such as switching from a progestin-only pill, it may be recommended to use a non-hormonal backup method of contraception (like condoms) when starting Ovral Lo 28-day.Â
- Effectiveness: While Ovral Lo 28-day is highly effective when taken correctly, note that no contraceptive method is 100% foolproof. There is still a small chance of pregnancy even when using Ovral Lo 28-day correctly.Â
- Increased Risk of Blood Clots: The use of combination oral contraceptives, including Ovral Lo 28-day, has been associated with a small increase in the risk of developing blood clots. This risk is higher in women who smoke, are over the age of 35, have a history of blood clots, or have certain medical conditions. Â
- Not Suitable for Everyone: Ovral Lo 28-day may not be suitable for everyone. Inform your healthcare provider about your complete medical history, including any existing medical conditions or previous adverse reactions to hormonal contraceptives. Your healthcare provider will be able to assess whether Ovral Lo 28-day is the right choice for you.Â
- Effectiveness with Vomiting or Diarrhea: If you experience vomiting or diarrhea within a few hours of taking an active pill, the effectiveness of Ovral Lo 28-day may be reduced. In such cases, use a backup method of contraception, such as condoms, and consult with your healthcare provider regarding further instructions.Â
- Breastfeeding: Ovral Lo 28-day is not recommended for use while breastfeeding. Discuss alternative contraceptive options with your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding. Â
