Drug Description

Indications

Otezla (apremilast) is an oral medication taken twice daily to reduce inflammation in the treatment of specific types of psoriatic arthritis, plaque psoriasis, and Behçet’s disease.

Otezla works by inhibiting an enzyme in the immune system that can affect certain cells and contribute to inflammation throughout the body. As a member of the phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitor group of medications, Otezla increases the level of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), a messenger system in the body, to reduce inflammation. Unlike biologic agents, Otezla is not derived from living organisms.

Uses and Dosage

Administer this medication orally, with or without food, according to your physician’s instructions, typically twice a day.

The manufacturer recommends against crushing, splitting, or chewing the tablet before ingestion.

The dose is determined by your medical condition and response to treatment. To mitigate the chance of adverse effects, your physician may advise starting with a low dose and gradually increasing it. Carefully follow your physician’s instructions.

Take this medication regularly to derive the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day.
