Description
Indications
Nexium, or Esomeprazole, is a medication for treating stomach and esophagus problems, such as ulcers and acid reflux. This drug, classified as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach produces. This medication can effectively relieve symptoms of these conditions, including heartburn, cough, and difficulty swallowing. Esomeprazole can aid in the healing of acid damage to the stomach and esophagus, help prevent ulcers, and reduce the risk of esophageal cancer.
For individuals who are self-treating with over-the-counter esomeprazole products, remember that these are intended for treating frequent heartburn two or more times per week. However, it may take up to four days for the medication to be in full effect and may not provide immediate relief. To ensure that you are using the correct drug, this medicine is crucial to read the package instructions carefully and check the ingredients label even if you have used the product before. Different products may contain varying ingredients intended for various purposes, and taking the right one could be beneficial.
Uses and Dosage
To take this medication, follow your doctor’s instructions or the directions on the product package if you are self-treating. Usually, this medication is taken orally once a day, at least one hour before a meal. The dosage and duration of treatment are determined based on your medical condition and response to the drug. It’s important not to increase the medication’s dosage or frequency beyond the recommended level.
Swallow the tablet whole without crushing or chewing them. If you have difficulty swallowing the tablet, you may open it and sprinkle it onto a tablespoon of unheated applesauce. However, you must destroy the mixture immediately without chewing it. Wait to prepare the mix for future use, which may affect the drug’s efficacy.
If needed, you can take antacids along with this medication. If you take sucralfate, take esomeprazole at least 30 minutes before sucralfate.
To get the maximum benefit from this medication, use it regularly and take it simultaneously daily. Continue taking this medication for the prescribed duration of treatment even if you start to feel better. If you use an over-the-counter product, do not take it for more than 14 days without consulting your doctor.
