Indications 

Mestinon SR is a prescribed medication indicated for enhancing muscle strength in individuals diagnosed with myasthenia gravis (muscle disease). 

As a cholinesterase inhibitor, Mestinon SR works by inhibiting the breakdown of acetylcholine, a natural substance essential for normal muscle function within the body. 

Uses and Dosage 

Read the medication guide and patient information leaflet for Mestinon SR before taking it for the first time and with every prescription refill. For questions or further information, consult your doctor or pharmacist. 

The appropriate dosage of Mestinon SR is determined based on individual medical conditions and response to the treatment. 

Typically, this medication is taken once to twice daily with a minimum interval of 6 hours between doses as prescribed by the doctor. 

Mestinon SR tablets must be swallowed whole. Do not crush or chew them, as doing so may result in rapid drug release, elevating the potential for side effects. 

For optimal outcomes, take this medication consistently and precisely as directed at a regular time daily.  

Avoid increasing the dosage or frequency of Mestinon SR beyond recommended, as this will not expedite recovery and may heighten the likelihood of adverse reactions. 

Keep Mestinon SR tablets in their original container and the included moisture-absorbing preservative canister. Store the container at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. 

Side Effects 

Common Side Effects 

• Abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea 
• Muscle cramps, twitching 
• Excessive sweating, heightened salivation 
• Cough accompanied by mucus 
• Skin rash 
• Blurred vision 

Inform your doctor if any of these common side effects persist or worsen. 

Serious Side Effects 

• Severe muscle weakness 
• Loss of movement in any body part 
• Weak or shallow breathing 
• Slurred speech, vision issues 
• Deterioration or lack of improvement in myasthenia gravis symptoms 

Stop taking Mestinon SR and contact your doctor if you have any of these serious side effects. 

Allergic Reactions 

Although rare, a severe allergic reaction to Mestinon SR can occur. Prompt medical assistance must be sought if any of the following symptoms manifest: 

• Hives 
• Difficulty breathing 
• Face, lips, tongue, or throat swelling

Cautions 

Before starting treatment with Mestinon SR, inform your doctor if you have any known allergies, particularly to pyridostigmine or any inactive components present in this SR tablet. 

To ensure Mestinon SR is safe for you, disclose to your doctor your medical background, especially if you have a history of: 

• Gastrointestinal obstruction 
• Urinary blockage 
• Respiratory conditions (e.g., asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD) 
• Kidney disease 
• Slow or irregular heartbeat 

Inform your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking, including prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements, to lower the potential of drug interaction with Mestinon SR. 

Exercise caution when operating machinery or engaging in activities that demand mental alertness and clear vision, as Mestinon SR has the potential to induce blurred vision and impair cognitive functions. 

The potential impact of Mestinon SR on a developing fetus is uncertain. Inform your doctor if you are currently pregnant or intend to conceive while taking this medication. 

The potential transfer of pyridostigmine into breast milk and its impact on nursing infants is uncertain. Inform your doctor if you are currently breastfeeding.
