Indications 

Marvelon 28-Day is a combined oral contraceptive pill used for unexpected and unwanted birth control. It contains desogestrel and ethinyl estradiol, two hormones that prevent pregnancy when taken correctly. 

Marvelon 28-Day works by inhibiting the release of an egg from the ovaries (ovulation). By preventing ovulation there is no egg available for fertilization by sperm. It thins the lining of the womb (endometrium). This makes it less likely for a fertilized egg to implant and grow in the womb, further preventing pregnancy. 

Use and Dosage 

Marvelon 28-Day comes in a pack containing 28 tablets. Take one tablet at the same time every day for 21 days, then take one “reminder” pill daily for the next 7 days. After finishing a pack, start a new pack the next day without any tablet-free days. This will ensure continuous contraception. You can start taking Marvelon 28-Day on any day of your menstrual cycle.  

If you start within the first five days of your period, you will have immediate protection against pregnancy. If you start at any other time, you may need to use backup contraception, such as condoms, for the first seven days. Take the pills in the correct order, following the arrows or numbers on the package. This will help you keep track of your daily pill-taking and ensure you are taking them in the correct sequence. 

If you miss a pill, refer to the package insert or consult your healthcare provider for specific instructions. In general, you should take the missed pill as soon as you remember, even if it means taking two pills in one day. If you miss multiple pills or are unsure what to do, use backup contraception and consult your healthcare provider.

Serious Side Effects 

• Breakthrough bleeding or spotting between periods 
• Breast lumps (for women with a history of breast disease) 
• Changes in sleep 
• Changes in weight 
• Complete stop of menstrual bleeding for several months in a row, or stop of menstrual bleeding that only occurs sometimes 
• Decreased bleeding during periods 
• Decreased interest in activities 
• Depression 
• Excessive eating 
• Frequent urination 
• Fruity breath odor) 
• Headaches may lessen but for others 
• Increased blood pressure 
• Increased thirst 
• Infections 
• Poor concentration 
• Poor wound healing 
• Prolonged bleeding during periods 
• Sudden lack of energy, fever, cough, sore throat 
• Swelling, pain, or tenderness in the upper abdominal area 
• They may increase in frequency or severity 
• Thoughts of suicide 
• Unexplained weight loss 
• Unusual swelling of the extremities 
• Vaginal infection with vaginal itching or irritation, or thick, white, or curd-like discharge 

Cautions 

• Effectiveness: Marvelon 28-Day is a hormonal contraceptive pill that is effective in preventing pregnancy when taken correctly. However, no contraceptive method is 100% effective. Discuss the effectiveness and potential risks with your doctor. 
• Interactions: Marvelon 28-Day may interact with certain medications, including some antibiotics, antifungal drugs, epilepsy medications, and herbal supplements. Inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking to ensure there are no harmful interactions. 
• Contraindications: Marvelon 28-Day may not be suitable for everyone. It is contraindicated in individuals with a history of blood clots, certain types of cancers, liver disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, and certain heart conditions. Inform your doctor about your medical history to determine if Marvelon 28-Day is appropriate for you. 
• Other Considerations: Marvelon 28-Day does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). If you are at risk of STIs, use additional barrier methods of contraception, such as condoms. 
• Mood Disorders: Some newer oral contraceptive pills, including Marvelon 28-Day, may have a weaker link to mood problems compared to older formulations. However, hormonal contraception can still potentially affect mood in some individuals.  
• Additional Contraceptive Precautions: When starting Marvelon 28-Day, use an additional contraceptive method, such as condoms, for the first 7 days of tablet-taking. This is to ensure optimal effectiveness and to minimize the risk of pregnancy. 
• Contraindications: Marvelon 28-Day may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions or risk factors. It is contraindicated in individuals with a history of blood clots, certain types of cancers, liver disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, and certain heart conditions. 
• Missed Pills: Missing pills or taking them inconsistently can reduce the effectiveness of Marvelon 28-Day in preventing pregnancy. Follow the instructions provided and consult your doctor or pharmacist if you miss a pill or have any concerns.
