Indications 

Loniten is a prescription medication used specifically to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) that is causing symptoms or damaging vital organs and cannot be controlled with the maximum recommended doses of a diuretic along with two other antihypertensive drugs. 

As a vasodilator, Loniten induces the relaxation of blood vessels, thereby promoting enhanced blood circulation throughout the body. 

Uses and Dosage 

Before taking Loniten and with each prescription refill, thoroughly review its medication guide and patient information leaflet. Seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns. 

The appropriate dosage of Loniten is determined by the patient’s medical condition and treatment response, with consideration for weight in children. 

Typically, Loniten is taken once or twice a day as prescribed by the doctor, without regard to food intake. 

Doctors usually initiate treatment with this medication at the lowest dose and gradually adjust it. Adhere strictly to your doctor’s instructions. 

For optimal results, take Loniten regularly around the same times daily. Refrain from altering the prescribed dosage and frequency of intake.  

Consult your doctor before discontinuing this medication, as abruptly stopping it can exacerbate certain conditions. Your doctor may recommend a gradual decrease in dosage if necessary. 

Side Effects 

Listed below are the potential adverse effects of Loniten. Inform your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms persist or worsen. 

Common Side Effects 

• Modifications in the color, length, or thickness of body or facial hair 
• Nausea 
• Vomiting 
• Rash 
• Breast pain or tenderness 

Serious Side Effects 

• New or worsening chest pain 
• Chest pain that extends to the jaw or shoulder 
• Fast or pounding heartbeats 
• Swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet 
• Rapid weight gain, particularly in the face and midsection 
• Shortness of breath 
• Feeling light-headed or at risk of fainting 
• Accumulation of fluid in the lungs, leading to: 
  • Painful breathing 
  • Shortness of breath while lying down 
  • Wheezing 
  • Gasping for breath 
  • Coughing up foamy mucus 
• Severe skin reaction: 
  • Fever 
  • Sore throat 
  • Facial or tongue swelling 
  • Eye burning 
  • Skin pain 
  • Red or purple skin rash that spreads, particularly in the face or upper body, leading to blistering and peeling. 

Call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the severe side effects above. 

Allergic Reactions 

Although rare, a severe allergic reaction to Loniten may occur. Seek medical attention promptly if you experience symptoms such as: 

• Rash 
• Itching 
• Swelling, particularly on the face, throat, or tongue  
• Severe dizziness 
• Difficulty breathing

Cautions 

Before starting treatment with Loniten, inform your doctor if you have any known hypersensitivities, especially to minoxidil, other medications, or any ingredients present in Loniten tablets. 

To ensure Loniten is safe for you, disclose to your physician your medical background, especially if you have a history of: 

• Pheochromocytoma (tumor of the adrenal gland) 
• Heart problems, such as heart failure, chest pain, or a recent heart attack 
• Kidney disease 
• Pulmonary hypertension (a lung disease)  

Some products may interact with Loniten, including guanethidine. To lower the risk of such drug interactions, inform all healthcare providers of your current use of prescription and non-prescription drugs, dietary supplements, and herbal products. 

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are using cough-and-cold products, diet aids, or NSAIDs like ibuprofen and naproxen, as they may contain ingredients that can increase your blood pressure. Seek advice on how to use them safely. 

Loniten may induce drowsiness. Refrain from driving a vehicle or operating machinery until you know its effects on your alertness and coordination. 

While taking Loniten, it may be necessary to restrict or decrease your dietary salt intake. Refrain from using potassium supplements or salt substitutes unless specifically instructed by your doctor. 

The use of Loniten during pregnancy should only be considered if the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus. Seek guidance from your healthcare provider prior to use.  

Minoxidil is excreted into breast milk but is unlikely to cause harm to a nursing infant. Consult with your doctor before breastfeeding while taking this medication.
