Drug Description

Indications

Latisse is an ophthalmic solution indicated for treating eyelash hypotrichosis, a condition characterized by insufficient or inadequate eyelash growth.

Being a prostaglandin analog, Latisse is thought to extend the anagen phase of the eyelash growth cycle, which is the active growth phase. This mechanism results in the proliferation of eyelashes, making them appear more prominent due to increased length, thickness, and darkness.

Uses and Dosage

Before using Latisse, and with every subsequent refill, carefully review its medication guide and patient information leaflet. For any questions or clarifications, do not hesitate to consult with your doctor or pharmacist.

Latisse is typically administered once daily to the eyelashes, preferably in the evening or per the physician’s instructions.

For proper application of Latisse, follow these steps:

  1. Before Application
    • Prior to the nightly application of Latisse, ensure a clean facial surface, free of makeup, contact lenses (can be reinserted after 15 minutes of application), and any other facial care products.
  2. Prepare the applicator
    • Remove the sterile applicator from its tray and hold it horizontally.
    • Apply one drop of Latisse solution to the area of the applicator nearest the tip, avoiding direct application onto the tip itself.
    • Do not let the tip of the bottle or applicator touch fingers and other surfaces to prevent contamination.
  3. Administer the solution
    • Using the applicator, gently glide along the skin at the base of the upper eyelashes, starting from the inner lash line and moving outwards.
    • Avoid applying directly in the eye or to the lower lid to prevent unintended hair growth beyond the targeted area.
    • If a solution enters the eye, do not rinse. (It is unlikely to cause harm since it is the same medication used to treat glaucoma)
  4. Blot Excess
    • Remove excess solution beyond the eyelid by blotting with a tissue.
  5. Discard the applicator
    • After a single use, discard the applicator. When applying to the opposite eyelid, use a new sterile applicator to rule out contamination between eyes.

Use Latisse around the same time every day as prescribed for best results. Avoid using it more frequently or for a longer duration than directed.

Side Effects

Listed below are potential adverse reactions associated with the use of Latisse. If any of them last or worsen, promptly inform your physician or pharmacist.

Common Side Effects

  • Redness or itching of the eyes

Serious Side Effects

  • Severe eye burning or itching
  • Swelling, redness, crusting, drainage, or severe discomfort of the eye (might be a sign of an infection)
  • Vision problems, eye pain, or seeing halos around lights
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Sensation of foreign body in the eye

Stop using Latisse and call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the severe symptoms mentioned above.

Allergic Reactions

While the chances of a severe allergic reaction to Latisse are low, prompt medical attention should be sought if it occurs. Indications of a serious allergic response may involve the following:

  • Rash
  • Facial, tongue, or throat itching or swelling
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Intense dizziness

The side effects of Latisse listed here are not complete. If any unmentioned side effects occur and cause discomfort, inform your doctor right away.

Cautions

Before starting treatment with Latisse, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have any known allergies, especially to bimatoprost, similar drugs (such as latanoprost, travoprost), or other medications.

This ophthalmic solution may contain inactive ingredients that can trigger allergic reactions or other problems. Ask your pharmacist for more details.

To ensure Latisse is safe for you, disclose your medical history to your doctor, especially of:

  • Glaucoma or increased pressure inside the eyes
  • Any swelling or infection in or around your eye
  • Retinal detachment
  • Eye surgery or injury affecting the lens of the eye

Latisse may interact with other products. To prevent potential drug interactions, disclose to your doctor all medications you are currently taking, including non-prescription and prescription drugs, herbal products, and vitamins.

Ocular hypertensive patients using Latisse, and IOP-lowering prostaglandin analogs concurrently may experience reduced effectiveness of IOP-lowering treatment, warranting close monitoring of changes in intraocular pressure.

Latisse use can lead to reversible darkening of the eyelid skin and permanently increased brown pigmentation of the colored part of the eye.

There is also a possibility of hair growth occurring in areas that Latisse frequently touches. To minimize this possibility, the excess solution should be blotted with a tissue or absorbent material.

Differences in eyelash length, thickness, fullness, pigmentation, number of eyelash hairs, and/or direction of eyelash growth may occur between eyes and are typically reversible upon discontinuing Latisse use.

Latisse use during pregnancy should only occur if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus.

The potential transfer of bimatoprost into breast milk and its impact on a nursing baby is unknown. Therefore, it is essential to inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding.
