Description
Indications
Lasix is a loop diuretic medication that functions as a water pill, effectively limiting the absorption of excess salt within the body and facilitating its excretion via urine.
This is primarily indicated for individuals experiencing fluid retention or edema as a result of medical conditions such as congestive heart failure, liver disease, and nephrotic syndrome.
Lasix may also be utilized in the treatment of high blood pressure or hypertension.
Uses and Dosage
To ensure safe and effective use of furosemide, carefully follow the instructions provided in the Patient Information Leaflet. If you have any questions, seek guidance from your doctor or pharmacist.
Take furosemide orally as directed by your doctor, typically once or twice daily with or without food. To avoid interruptions in your sleep from frequent urination, avoid taking this medication within four hours of bedtime.
Dosage of furosemide is individualized based on factors such as age, medical condition, and response to treatment. For children, dosage is also based on weight. Older adults typically start with a lower dose to minimize the risk of side effects. Never increase your dose or take it more frequently than directed.
For the medication to be most effective, take it at the same time each day. Even if you feel well, continue taking furosemide as prescribed. This is especially important for people with hypertension who may not experience any noticeable symptoms.
Certain medications, such as sucralfate, cholestyramine, and colestipol, can reduce furosemide absorption. To avoid this, separate the timing of furosemide and any of these medications by at least two hours.

If you have recently undergone an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or any type of scan that uses a radioactive dye injected into your veins, be sure to inform your doctor.
Do not take more Lasix than the recommended dose and that you continue to take the medication as prescribed, even if you feel well, particularly if you are being treated for high blood pressure. High doses of furosemide can cause irreversible hearing loss.
Lasix should not be used if you are unable to urinate, and if you experience any adverse reactions or worsening symptoms, consult your healthcare provider promptly.
