Indications 

Keppra Oral Solution is a prescribed medication used as an adjunctive treatment for the following conditions: 

• Partial onset seizures in adults and children aged 4 and older with epilepsy 
• Myoclonic seizures in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy 

Keppra Oral Solution is categorized as an anticonvulsant medication. Its exact mechanism of action remains uncertain but is believed to work by reducing abnormal brain excitability. 

Uses and Dosage 

Read the accompanying medication guide and patient information leaflet of Keppra Oral Solution before initial use and with each prescription refill. Consult your doctor if you have questions or need additional information. 

The appropriate dosage of this medication is determined by the patient’s medical condition and response to treatment, taking into account weight in children. 

Typically, Keppra Oral Solution is taken twice daily (morning and night) as prescribed by the doctor, without regard to food intake. 

Utilize a designated measuring device, such as a medicine spoon or cup, to accurately administer the prescribed dosage rather than using an ordinary household spoon. 

For optimal results, take Keppra Oral Solution regularly at around the same time(s) each day, exactly as directed.  

Avoid increasing the dosage or taking this medication more frequently or for a longer duration than prescribed, as it will not expedite improvement and may heighten the risk of side effects. 

Consult your doctor before discontinuing treatment with Keppra oral Solution, as abrupt discontinuation may worsen seizures. Dosage should be gradually reduced. 

Side Effects 

Common Side Effects: 

• Abdominal discomfort or diarrhea 
• Sensation of dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, or weakness 
• Irritation in the nose or throat 
• Sleep disturbances 
• Headaches 
• Upset stomach or vomiting 
• Loss of appetite 
• Symptoms resembling flu 

Promptly inform your doctor if any of the above-listed common side effects continue or worsen. 

Serious Side Effects 

• Worsening or altered seizures after starting Keppra Oral Solution 
• Hallucinations  
• Severe dizziness or fainting 
• Changes in balance or difficulty walking 

Inform your doctor right away if any of the above-listed serious side effects are experienced. 

Increased risk of suicidal thoughts or actions may occur while taking Keppra Oral Solutions, particularly in individuals with a history of such tendencies. Contact your doctor immediately if new or exacerbated signs of low mood (depression), nervousness, restlessness, irritability, panic attacks, or changes in mood or behavior arise. Inform your doctor promptly if any thoughts or actions of suicide occur. 

Severe skin reactions (stevens-johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis) may occur during the use of Keppra Oral Solution. Seek immediate medical help for symptoms such as: 

• Red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin 
• Red or irritated eyes 
• Sores in the mouth, throat, nose, or eyes 

Decreased blood cell counts due to Keppra Oral Solution may occur, potentially causing bleeding issues, infections, or anemia. Contact your doctor if signs of infection, unexplained bruising or bleeding, fatigue, or weakness are experienced. 

Allergic Reactions 

Although rare, a severe allergic reaction to Keppra Oral Solution can occur. Seek prompt medical assistance if you notice symptoms such as: 

• Difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking 
• Face, lips, tongue, or throat swelling 
• Hives 
• Itching 
• Rash 
• Redness, swollen or blistered skin, with or without fever 
• Tightness in the chest or throat 
• Unusual hoarseness 

This list does not include all potential side effects of Keppra Oral Solution. Inform your doctor should you notice any unlisted effects. 

Cautions 

Before starting treatment with Keppra Oral Solution, inform your doctor if you have any known allergies, particularly to levetiracetam or any of the ingredients in this oral solution. 

To ensure Keppra Oral Solution is safe for you, disclose to your doctor your medical background, especially if you have a history of: 

• Kidney disease (e.g., dialysis treatment) 
• Mental/mood disorders (e.g., depression) 

Various medications may interact with Keppra Oral Solution, including orlistat. To prevent the risk of such drug interactions, inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including prescriptions, nonprescription drugs, dietary supplements, and herbal medicines. 

Keppra Oral Solution can cause dizziness or drowsiness. Refrain from driving or operating machinery until you understand how this medication impacts you. 

Children might display increased sensitivity to the side effects of Keppra Oral Solution, particularly concerning mental and mood changes (e.g., irritability, aggression, agitation, anger, anxiety, depression, or thoughts of suicide). Those under 4 years old may face a higher risk of elevated blood pressure while on this medication. 

Individuals aged 65 and above should take Keppra Oral Solution cautiously due to potential heightened sensitivity to side effects, particularly increased drowsiness, dizziness, or diminished coordination, which may elevate the risk of falls. 

Keppra Oral Solution might be ineffective during pregnancy. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to conceive before taking this medication. 

Levetiracetam transfers into breast milk. Prior to breastfeeding, consult your doctor.
