Indications 

Kaopectate Liquid Vanilla is an over-the-counter medication that is commonly used for the relief of symptoms associated with diarrhea and upset stomach. It is designed to provide fast and effective relief from symptoms such as traveler’s diarrhea, heartburn, indigestion, nausea, and gas.  

Kaopectate is formulated with the active ingredient bismuth subsalicylate, which has anti-diarrheal and anti-inflammatory properties. Bismuth subsalicylate helps to control and reduce diarrhea. It does this by slowing down the movement of the intestines, allowing more time for water and electrolyte absorption. By reducing the speed of bowel movements, it can help to alleviate the frequency and urgency of diarrhea. 

Use and Dosage 

Before each use, shake the bottle well to ensure that the liquid is properly mixed. To ensure accurate dosing, you can use a convenient pre-measured dosing cup or follow the provided instructions on the packaging.  

• The recommended dose for adults is usually 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of the suspension every 30 to 60 minutes, as needed, for diarrhea or upset stomach relief. The maximum daily dose is 16 tablespoons (240 ml). 
• For children aged 12 years and above, the recommended dose is also 2 tablespoons (30 ml) every 30 to 60 minutes, as needed, for up to 8 doses per day. 
• Children aged 9 to 11 years old should use 1 tablespoon (15 ml) every 30 to 60 minutes, as needed, for up to 8 doses per day. 
• Children aged 6 to 8 years old should use half a tablespoon (7.5 ml) every 30 to 60 minutes, as needed, for up to 8 doses per day. 

Do not exceed the recommended dosage unless instructed by a healthcare professional. If necessary, the dosage may be repeated after a certain period of time.

Serious Side Effects 

• Tinnitus or ringing in the ears 
• Reye’s Syndrome (a rare but serious condition that can occur in children and teenagers who have recently had a viral infection, which has been associated with salicylate use) 
• Blood in stool 
• Confusion 
• Irregular heartbeat or palpitations 
• Seizures 
• Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing 

Cautions 

• Avoid use in certain situations: Bismuth Subsalicylate may not be suitable for everyone. Avoid using it if you have a known allergy to bismuth subsalicylate or salicylates. Additionally, if you have severe diarrhea accompanied by fever or blood in the stool, seek medical attention instead of relying solely on over-the-counter medications. 
• Be cautious with long-term use: Kaopectate Liquid Vanilla is intended for short-term relief of symptoms. If your symptoms persist for more than two days or worsen, consult a healthcare professional. 
• Be aware of potential side effects: Like any medication, Bismuth Subsalicylate can cause side effects. Common side effects may include constipation, headache, dizziness, sleepiness, dry mouth, abdominal pain, indigestion, nausea, and vomiting. If you experience severe or persistent side effects, seek medical attention. 
• Do not use in children under 12 years old: Kaopectate Liquid Vanilla is not recommended for use in children under the age of 12, unless specifically directed by a healthcare professional. There may be alternative medications or formulations that are more appropriate for pediatric use. 
• Avoid alcohol consumption: Avoid consuming alcoholic beverages while taking Bismuth Subsalicylate. Alcohol can increase the risk of certain side effects, such as dizziness or drowsiness. 
• Do not exceed the recommended duration of use: Bismuth Subsalicylate is designed for short-term use to relieve acute symptoms. Do not exceed the recommended duration of use specified on the product packaging or as advised by a healthcare professional. 
• Be cautious with certain medical conditions: If you have certain medical conditions, such as kidney disease, liver disease, gout, bleeding disorders, or diabetes, exercise caution when using Kaopectate Liquid Vanilla.  
• Store properly and check expiration date: Ensure that you store Kaopectate Liquid Vanilla properly, following the instructions on the packaging. Additionally, always check the expiration date before using the medication and discard any expired product.
