Inderal is a beta blocker medication prescribed for treating several health conditions such as hypertension, irregular heartbeats, tremors, and post-heart attack to increase the survival rate. It is also indicated for preventing migraine headaches and angina (chest pain). 

The mechanism of action of Inderal involves the inhibition of specific endogenous compounds in the body, such as epinephrine that exert an impact on the cardiovascular system. This activity leads to a decrease in heart rate, blood pressure, and cardiac workload, thus mitigating strain on the heart. 

Inderal’s antihypertensive effects aid in averting strokes, cardiac events, and renal impairment. While its mitigating factor for chest pain can significantly enhance an individual’s ability to exercise. 

Uses and Dosage

  • Edema in the ankles/feet 
  • Unexplained exhaustion 
  • Unexpected/sudden weight gain 
• Bradycardia 
• Syncope 
• Decreased sexual function 
• Augmented thirst/urination 
• Easy bruising/bleeding 
• Indications of infection: 
  • Persistent sore throat 
  • Fever 
• Swollen/tender joints 

Call your doctor at once if you experience any of the severe side effects mentioned above. 

Allergic Reactions 

In rare instances, an extremely severe allergic reaction to Inderal may occur. Seek medical assistance immediately if you observe any indications of a severe allergic reaction, such as: 

• Rash

• Face, tongue, or throat swelling 
• Severe dizziness 
• Breathing difficulties

• Certain muscle/nerve disorders (e.g., myasthenia gravis) 

There are certain products that may have interactions with Inderal. To prevent such drug interactions, apprise your doctor and pharmacist of all the medications, including prescription and non-prescription drugs, vitamins, supplements, or herbal products you are currently or planning to take. 

For individuals taking bile acid-binding resins such as cholestyramine or colestipol to lower cholesterol, Inderal should be taken either at least 1 hour before or at least 4 hours after these medications. 

Inderal can affect specific lab exams (e.g., glaucoma screening, and cardiovascular stress tests using arbutamine), potentially resulting in erroneous findings. Ensure that all physicians and laboratory staff are informed of your use of this medication. 

During pregnancy, Inderal should only be used when necessary. Newborns exposed to it might experience reduced birth weight, decreased blood sugar levels, and slower breathing/heart rate. Consult your physician regarding the advantages and potential dangers before use. 

Exercise caution when administering Inderal to a nursing woman as propranolol is excreted in human milk. Consult a doctor before nursing an infant while taking this medication.
