Indications 

The Imitrex Injection Stat Dose Prefilled Syringe Refill contains pre-filled syringe cartridges of the medication sumatriptan. Sumatriptan is commonly used to treat acute migraine attacks or cluster headaches.  

When a migraine attack or cluster headache occurs, blood vessels in the brain become enlarged and release chemicals that cause inflammation and pain. Sumatriptan works by constricting these blood vessels and inhibiting the release of these pain-causing chemicals. This helps to relieve the symptoms associated with migraines and cluster headaches. 

The refill consists of prefilled syringe cartridges that contain the medication. It is intended for single-use only and should not be reused or shared with others.  

Use and Dosage 

Imitrex Injection is administered as a subcutaneous (under the skin) injection using a prefilled syringe. The injection is typically given in the thigh or upper arm. 

Clean the injection site with an alcohol swab and allow it to dry. Take off the cap from the prefilled syringe refill. Attach a new sterile needle to the syringe by twisting it onto the syringe firmly. Hold the syringe with the needle pointing upwards and tap the barrel gently to make any air bubbles rise to the top. Push the plunger slightly to remove the air bubbles from the syringe. This ensures that the needle is filled with medication and there are no air bubbles. Choose an appropriate injection site, such as the thigh or upper arm. Pinch the skin at the injection site and insert the needle into the skin at a 90-degree angle. Push the plunger all the way down to inject the medication. After the injection, carefully pull the needle out of the skin and apply gentle pressure to the injection site with a clean cotton ball or gauze. 

Safely dispose of the used syringe in a sharps container or as directed by your healthcare provider or local regulations.

• Dizziness, faintness, or lightheadedness when getting up suddenly from a lying or sitting position 
• Fainting 
• Fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat or pulse 
• Headache 
• Nervousness 
• Pounding in the ears 
• Shakiness in the legs, arms, hands, or feet 
• Slow heartbeat 
• Sweating 
• Tight feeling in the head 
• Tightness or pressure in the chest 
• Trembling or shaking of the hands or feet 
• Unusual tiredness or weakness 

Cautions 

• Injection site reactions: Injection site reactions may occur, such as redness, swelling, or pain at the injection site. Follow proper injection techniques and monitor for any signs of a reaction. 
• Kidney problems: The use of sumatriptan injection is not recommended in elderly patients with kidney problems. If you have kidney problems, consult with your healthcare provider before using Imitrex Injection Stat Dose Prefilled Syringe Refill. 
• Serotonin syndrome: Imitrex Injection Stat Dose Prefilled Syringe Refill may increase serotonin levels in the body. Serotonin syndrome is a potentially life-threatening condition that can occur when there is an excessive accumulation of serotonin in the body. Be aware of the symptoms of serotonin syndrome, such as mental status changes, autonomic instability, and neuromuscular hyperactivity, and seek medical attention if these symptoms occur. 
• Drug interactions: Imitrex Injection Stat Dose Prefilled Syringe Refill may interact with other medications, potentially increasing the risk of side effects or reducing the effectiveness of either medication.  
• Cardiovascular effects: Imitrex Injection Stat Dose Prefilled Syringe Refill can cause changes in blood pressure, including increases in blood pressure. Monitor your blood pressure before and after using the medication, especially if you have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or other cardiovascular conditions. 
• Allergic reactions: Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to Imitrex Injection Stat Dose Prefilled Syringe Refill. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or difficulty breathing. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention. 
• Hemiplegic or basilar migraine: Imitrex Injection Stat Dose Prefilled Syringe Refill is not recommended for use in individuals with hemiplegic or basilar migraine. These types of migraines can cause severe neurological symptoms, and the use of Imitrex Injection may increase the risk of complications in these cases. 
• Liver problems: Individuals with liver problems may need to use Imitrex Injection Stat Dose Prefilled Syringe Refill with caution, as the medication is metabolized in the liver. Discuss your liver condition with your healthcare provider before using the medication. 
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding: The safety of Imitrex Injection Stat Dose Prefilled Syringe Refill during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been fully established. Consult with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding before using the medication.
