Indications 

Ilotycin Eye Ointment is indicated for treating superficial eye infections like conjunctivitis and as a preventive measure against bacterial eye infections in newborns, specifically neonatal gonococcal or chlamydial conjunctivitis. 

As a macrolide antibiotic, Ilotycin Eye Ointment works by halting the growth of bacteria responsible for the infection. 

Uses and Dosage 

Read the accompanying medication guide and patient information leaflet of Ilotycin Eye Ointment before using it for the first time and with every prescription refill. Seek guidance from your doctor or pharmacist if you have any inquiries or need additional information. 

Ilotycin Eye Ointment is intended solely for application to the eyes and should not be swallowed or injected. 

Typically, Ilotycin Eye Ointment is applied to the affected eye(s) up to 6 times daily, depending on the severity of the infection. 

To apply the ointment: 

1. Begin by washing your hands thoroughly. 
   • Ensure contamination prevention by not touching the tube’s tip or allowing it to come into contact with your eye, eyelid, or any other surface. 
2. Tilt your head back, gaze upward, and gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a pocket.  
3. Following your doctor’s instructions, place a strip of ointment (around half an inch or 1 centimeter) into the pocket. 
4. Gently close the eye, moving the eyeball in all directions to distribute the medication without blinking or rubbing the eye. 
5. If instructed, repeat these steps for the other eye. 
6. Finally, wipe off any excess medication from the tube tip using a clean tissue before recapping it. 

Consistently use Ilotycin Eye Ointment at consistent times daily to maximize its effectiveness. 

Missing doses of Ilotycin Eye Ointment may raise the chance of developing medication-resistant infections. If you miss a dose, apply the ointment as soon as possible. However, if it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one.  

Use this eye ointment exactly as directed. Avoid exceeding the recommended amount or frequency of use. Complete the entire course, as stopping it prematurely may enable bacterial growth and lead to reinfection. 

Side Effects 

Common Side Effects 

• Redness in the eye 
• Mild eye irritation 

If any of these common side effects persist or worsen, inform your doctor promptly. 

Serious Side Effects 

• Intense burning, stinging, or irritation following the ointment use 
• Eye infection symptoms: pain, swelling, severe discomfort, crusting or discharge, heightened light sensitivity 

Stop using Ilotycin Eye Ointment and call your doctor immediately if any serious side effects are experienced. 

Allergic Reactions 

In rare instances, Ilotycin Eye Ointment may cause a severe allergic reaction. Seek immediate medical help if you experience signs of an allergic response, such as: 

• Hives 
• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat 
• Difficulty breathing

Cautions 

Before starting treatment with Ilotycin Eye Ointment, inform your doctor if you have any known allergies, particularly to erythromycin, to other macrolide antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin), or any of the ingredients of this ointment. 

Disclose your medical history with your doctor before using Ilotycin Eye Ointment to assess its appropriateness for your condition. 

The efficacy of Ilotycin Eye Ointment remains unaffected by concurrent drug use. Nevertheless, disclosing all your medications to your healthcare providers, including prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements is recommended. 

Temporary blurriness in vision might occur after applying Ilotycin Eye OIntment. Refrain from activities like driving or tasks requiring clear vision until your eyesight returns to normal. 

Ilotycin Eye Ointment specifically targets bacterial eye infections and is ineffective against other eye infections. Misuse or unnecessary use of this or any antibiotic can reduce its effectiveness over time. 

The potential effects of Ilotycin Eye Ointment on an unborn baby are unknown. Inform your doctor if you are currently pregnant or planning to conceive before using this ointment. 

Consult your doctor regarding the safety of breastfeeding while using Ilotycin Eye Ointment.
