Description
Indications
Hyzaar DS is a prescribed medication used to lower high blood pressure (hypertension).
Hyzaar DS contains two active ingredients: losartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker and hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic or “water pill”.
Losartan functions to reduce blood pressure by dilating blood vessels facilitating improved blood flow. Conversely, hydrochlorothiazide assists in blood pressure management by stimulating increased urine production, aiding the body in eliminating excess salt and water.
Uses and Dosage
Before taking Hyzaar DS for the first time and with each prescription refill, carefully review the accompanying medication guide and patient information leaflet. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for any inquiries or additional information.
The recommended dose of this medication may vary from person to person due to factors such as body weight, medical conditions, concurrent medication usage, and response to the treatment.
Typically, Hyzaar DS is taken once daily as prescribed by the doctor, with or without food. If increased urination occurs, taking this medication at least 4 hours before bedtime is recommended to minimize the need to urinate during the night.
To maximize its effectiveness, consistently take this medication at the same times daily, precisely as prescribed. Continue taking it, even if you are feeling well, as many individuals with high blood pressure remain asymptomatic.

Cautions
Before starting treatment with Hyzaar DS, inform your doctor if you have any known allergies, especially to losartan, hydrochlorothiazide, or any of the inactive ingredients in this tablet.
To ensure Hyzaar DS is safe for you, disclose to your doctor your medical background, especially if you have a history of:
- Gout
- Kidney disease
- Liver disease
- Lupus
- Dehydration
- Elevated blood potassium levels
- Skin cancer
Certain products contain components that may elevate blood pressure or exacerbate heart failure. Inform your doctor about all medications and other products you are using and inquire about their safe usage, particularly cough-and-cold products, diet aids, or NSAIDs like ibuprofen/naproxen.
Some of the products that may interact with Hyzaar DS include:
- Aliskiren
- Dofetilide
- Lithium
- Medications that might elevate blood potassium levels (e.g., sparsentan, ACE inhibitors like benazepril/lisinopril, and birth control pills containing drospirenone)
If you are using cholesterol-lowering medications like bile acid-binding resins such as cholestyramine or colestipol, ensure to take Hyzaar DS either 4 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after these drugs.
Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is important for individuals with diabetes who are on Hyzaar DS. Sharing these results with a healthcare provider is essential, as they may need to modify the patient’s diabetes medication, exercise plan, or dietary regimen.
Hyzaar DS might affect specific lab tests (parathyroid function), potentially leading to inaccurate results. Ensure that lab personnel and your physicians are informed about your use of this medication.
Hyzaar DS can heighten sun sensitivity and the risk of skin cancer, particularly with prolonged use. Restrict sun exposure, refrain from tanning booths and sunlamps, and employ sunscreen and protective clothing outdoors. Promptly notify your doctor in case of sunburn, skin blisters/redness, or any new or altered moles/skin lesions.
Avoid the use of potassium supplements or salt substitutes while taking Hyzaar DS unless explicitly recommended by your healthcare provider.
Contact your doctor if you are experiencing vomiting, diarrhea, or excessive sweating. Dehydration risk is heightened while using Hyzaar DS, potentially causing severe low blood pressure, significant electrolyte imbalances, or kidney failure.
Refrain from overheating or dehydration during physical activity, in hot conditions, or due to insufficient fluid intake while taking Hyzaar DS.
Pregnant individuals should avoid taking Hyzaar DS. In the event of pregnancy, immediate cessation of medication and prompt notification of a healthcare professional is advised, as hydrochlorothiazide and losartan can pose harm or fatality to the developing fetus during the second or third trimester.
The transfer of losartan into breast milk is uncertain, while hydrochlorothiazide does pass into breast milk but is unlikely to cause harm to a nursing infant. Consulting your doctor before breastfeeding while taking Hyzaar DS is still recommended.
