Indications 

Chlorthalidone is a medication prescribed for the treatment of high blood pressure, medically referred to as hypertension. The primary objective of administering chlorthalidone is to reduce elevated blood pressure levels, thereby mitigating the risk of stroke, heart attacks, and kidney complications.  

Hygroton is utilized to alleviate the retention of excess salt and water in the body, a common manifestation of conditions such as heart failure, liver disease, and kidney disease. By diminishing the accumulation of surplus salt and water, chlorthalidone aids in reducing swelling (edema) and alleviating breathing difficulties resulting from the accumulation of fluid in the lungs.  

As a diuretic, chlorthalidone acts as a “water pill” by enhancing urine production, particularly during the initial stages of treatment. Moreover, it facilitates the relaxation of blood vessels, thereby promoting smoother blood flow. 

Uses and Dosage 

Administer this medication orally with food according to the instructions provided by your doctor, typically once a day in the morning. Avoid taking this medication within a four-hour timeframe before your bedtime to minimize the need for nocturnal urination. The prescribed dosage of this medication is contingent upon your specific medical condition and your individual response to the treatment.

Continue taking this medication even if you feel well, as individuals with high blood pressure often remain asymptomatic. 

If you are concurrently taking certain medications for cholesterol reduction (such as bile acid-binding resins like cholestyramine or colestipol), ensure that you administer this product at least two hours before or four hours after consuming those medications. 

Side Effects 

If you experience any signs of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical assistance, including hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. 

Serious Side Effects

Serious side effects associated with chlorthalidone necessitate contacting your doctor promptly. These include: 

• A sensation of light-headedness or feeling like you might faint 
• Symptoms of low sodium levels, such as:  
  • Headache 
  • Confusion 
  • Slurred speech 
  • Severe weakness 
  • Vomiting 
  • Loss of coordination 
  • Feeling of unsteadiness 
• Manifestations of low potassium levels, such as:  
  • Leg cramps 
  • Constipation 
  • Irregular heartbeats 
  • Chest fluttering 
  • Increased thirst or urination 
  • Numbness or tingling 
  • Muscle weakness 
  • Limp sensation 
• Signs of low magnesium levels, including:  
  • Dizziness 
  • Irregular heartbeats 
  • Feeling jittery 
  • Muscle cramps/spasms 
  • Sensation of coughing or choking 
• Indications of kidney problems, such as:  
  • Diminished or absent urination 
  • Swelling in the feet or ankles 
  • Feeling fatigued  
  • Shortness of breath 

Common Side Effects

Common side effects associated with chlorthalidone may include: 

• Low blood pressure, resulting in a feeling of light-headedness 
• Kidney problems 
• Dizziness 
• Imbalances in electrolyte levels, such as reduced potassium, sodium, or magnesium levels in the blood 

Cautions 

Prior to initiating chlorthalidone treatment, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies to the medication or other substances. Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have kidney disease, liver disease, gout, lupus, or an untreated mineral imbalance such as low potassium levels. 

This medication may cause dizziness. Consuming alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can intensify this dizziness. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities that require alertness until you can safely do so. Limit the consumption of alcoholic beverages. Consult your doctor if you are using marijuana (cannabis). 

If you have diabetes, this product may impact your blood sugar levels. Regularly monitor your blood sugar as instructed and share the results with your doctor. Promptly notify your doctor if you experience symptoms of high blood sugar, such as increased thirst or urination. Your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes medication, exercise regimen, or diet accordingly. 

During pregnancy, use this medication only if clearly necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor. This medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
