Description
IndicationsÂ
FML is an ophthalmic solution indicated for treating inflammation in the eye that responds to corticosteroids. It can help reduce swelling and irritation in various parts of the eye, like the eyelids, the surface of the eye, and the front part of the eye. Â
Belonging to the class of corticosteroid medication, FML works by producing lipocortins, which are proteins that prevent the production of substances that cause inflammation, like leukotrienes and prostaglandins. It does this by stopping the release of a long-chain fatty acid called arachidonic acid from cell membranes.Â
Uses and DosageÂ
Before using FML and every time you get a refill, make sure to read its patient information leaflet and medication guide. Do not hesitate to consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist for any questions or clarifications.Â
The appropriate dosage and duration of FML treatment are determined by the medical condition being treated and the individual’s response to therapy. Â
Typically, FML is given as one drop, two to four times per day, with a possible increase to one application every four hours during the first 24 to 48 hours. Â
If using additional eye medication, wait at least 5-10 minutes between applications and use eye drops before eye ointments to ensure proper absorption.Â
Before using FML, ensure to remove contact lenses if you are wearing one, as the preservative in this product may be absorbed by them. Wait at least 15 minutes after administering the eye drops before reinserting the lenses.Â
To apply the eye drop:Â
- Thoroughly shake the eye drops before every use, and wash your hands beforehand.Â
- Do not touch the dropper tip or allow it to come into contact with your eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.Â
- Tilt your head back and pull down your lower eyelid to create a pouch.Â
- Hold the dropper over your eye and place one drop in the pouch.Â
- Close your eyes gently for 1-2 minutes while looking downwards.Â
- Apply slight pressure at the corner of your eye to prevent the medication from draining out.Â
- Refrain from rubbing your eye or blinking.Â
- Repeat steps for the other eye if directed and if more than one drop is needed.Â
- After use, replace the dropper cap without rinsing the dropper.Â
Adhere strictly to the prescribed regimen of FML. Do not use more or less of it, as it may elevate the risk of adverse effects.Â
To get the most out of FML, use it regularly at the same time(s) each day and consult your doctor before discontinuing treatment; follow their tapering instructions to avoid premature cessation.Â
If your condition fails to improve after two days or deteriorates, inform your physician.Â
Side EffectsÂ
Potential adverse reactions associated with the use of FML are listed below. If any of them last or worsen, inform your physician promptly.Â
Common Side EffectsÂ
- Mild stinging or burning sensation in the eyesÂ
- Feeling of a foreign object in the eyeÂ
- Swollen or reddened eyelidsÂ
- Blurred visionÂ
- Eyelid droopingÂ
Serious Side EffectsÂ
- Pain behind the eyes or sudden changes in visionÂ
- Delayed healing post-eye surgeryÂ
- Eye pain, tunnel vision, or halos around lightsÂ
- New eye infection symptoms, including eye swelling, drainage, or crustingÂ
Call your doctor at once if you experience any of the severe symptoms listed above.Â
Allergic ReactionsÂ
Prompt medical attention should be sought if any signs of an allergic reaction to FML are observed, such as:Â
- RashÂ
- Difficult breathingÂ
- Severe dizzinessÂ
- Facial, lips, tongue, or throat itching or swellingÂ
The adverse effects of FML listed here are not exhaustive. Inform your doctor immediately if any unmentioned side effects are experienced and cause discomfort.Â
CautionsÂ
Before using FML, tell your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have any known hypersensitivity, especially to fluorometholone, other medications, or to other ingredients present in FML.Â
FML is not recommended for use in viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva, such as dendritic keratitis, vaccinia, and varicella, as well as in cases of mycobacterial and fungal infections in ocular structures.Â
To ensure FML is safe for you, disclose to your doctor your medical history, especially of:Â Â
- Eye infectionsÂ
- Recent eye surgeryÂ
- CataractsÂ
- Open-angle glaucomaÂ
- Severe nearsightedness (myopia)Â
- DiabetesÂ
To avoid potential drug interactions, disclose all current or planned prescription and non-prescription medications, dietary supplements, vitamins, and herbal products to your doctor and pharmacist before using FML.Â
Prolonged or high-dose usage of FML may lead to severe eye conditions, such as elevated intraocular pressure and cataracts. Notify your doctor immediately if any side effects occur, including vision impairment or eye discomfort.Â
Following the application of FML, your vision may experience temporary blurriness. Until you can safely perform tasks requiring clear vision, such as operating machinery or driving, refrain from engaging in such activities.Â
If FML is administered for more than ten days, it is recommended to monitor intraocular pressure routinely. Â
Due to uncertainty regarding FML’s potential for fetal harm, it should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefits are deemed to outweigh the potential risks to the fetus.Â
The potential transfer of fluorometholone into breast milk is uncertain. Seek medical advice before breastfeeding while using this medication.Â
