Description
Indications
Exjade (Deferasirox) is indicated for treating persistent hyperferritinemia resulting from repeated blood transfusions. Exjade is employed in individuals with a specific blood disorder, namely non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia, who do not necessitate blood transfusions. Its mechanism of action involves the sequestration of iron, facilitating the elimination of excess iron through fecal excretion. Deferasirox is categorized as an iron-chelating agent within the pharmacological class.
Certain blood disorders, such as sickle cell disease and anemia, often require frequent blood transfusions, which provide substantial benefits. However, these transfusions can contribute to excessive iron accumulation within the body. Iron overload can lead to complications like heart failure, liver disease, and diabetes. Reducing excess iron levels can mitigate the risk of developing these conditions.
Uses and Dosage
Exjade removes excess iron from the bloodstream. This medication treats iron overload caused by blood transfusions in adults and children (2 years and older). It can treat chronic iron overload syndrome due to a genetic blood disorder (non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia) in adults and children (10 years and older).
Various factors, including your specific medical condition, body weight, results from laboratory tests, and your response to treatment, determine the prescribed dosage of this medication. Adjustments to your dosage may be necessary, or in some cases, the medicine may need to be discontinued altogether if you experience specific side effects.
The administration of Exjade therapy is warranted exclusively in cases where patients exhibit clear indications of chronic transfusional iron overload. These indications should encompass the transfusion of a minimum of 100 mL/kg of packed red blood cells (equivalent to at least 20 units of packed red blood cells for an individual weighing 40 kg or more) alongside a consistently elevated serum ferritin level exceeding 1,000 mcg/L.
