Indications 

The EXELON PATCH is approved for managing dementia associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), encompassing patients across the spectrum of the disease’s mild, moderate, and severe stages. 

The Exelon Patch is indicated for treating mild to moderate dementia explicitly associated with Parkinson’s disease (PDD). 

Uses and Dosage 

Rivastigmine is indicated for the management of cognitive impairment associated with Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. While Rivastigmine does not provide a definitive cure for either condition, it can enhance memory and mental awareness and facilitate the execution of daily activities.  

The action mechanism involves restoring neurotransmitter equilibrium within the brain, thereby modulating the natural substances responsible for neuronal communication. 

The recommended initial dose for treatment initiation is the application of one EXELON PATCH with a strength of 4.6 mg/24 hours to the skin once daily. 

Side Effects 

Common Side Effects

Potential side effects of this medication may include:  

• Nausea 
• Vomiting 
• Loss of appetite/weight loss 
• Diarrhea 
• Weakness 
• Dizziness 
• Drowsiness 
• Shakiness (tremors) 
• Skin irritation at the site of application.  

Contact your doctor or pharmacist if any of these effects persist or worsen.

Severe Side Effects

Your doctor has prescribed this medication based on their assessment that the benefits outweigh the risks of potential side effects. Many individuals using this medication do not experience severe side effects. 

If any of the following serious side effects occur, inform your doctor immediately:  

• Slow heartbeat 
• Black stools 
• Vomit that resembles coffee grounds 
• Severe stomach or abdominal pain 
• Seizures 
• Difficulty urinating 

Cautions 

Before initiating the use of rivastigmine, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies, including any history of severe allergic skin reactions associated with previous use of the patch. Disclose any other allergies, as this product may contain inactive ingredients that could trigger allergic reactions or other complications. Consult your pharmacist for further information regarding the ingredients. 

Furthermore, before using this medication, share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of:  

• Breathing or lung problems (such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD]) 
• Stomach or intestinal issues (such as ulcers or bleeding) 
• Heart problems (such as sick sinus syndrome or other conduction disorders) 
• Episodes of fainting 
• Seizures 
• Difficulties with urination (such as due to an enlarged prostate) 
• Liver disease 

Rivastigmine may lead to a condition that affects the heart rhythm called QT prolongation. While this occurrence is rare, it can potentially cause serious, and in rare cases, fatal fast or irregular heartbeat, along with other symptoms such as severe dizziness or fainting. If you experience any of these symptoms, immediate medical attention is required.
