Description
Indications
Epzicom is a combination medication consisting of abacavir and lamivudine, used alongside other antiretroviral therapies to manage HIV infection. By reducing the viral load and boosting the immune system, Epzicom helps prevent HIV-related complications and improves the overall quality of life.
It belongs to the class of nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). It is important to note that Epzicom does not cure HIV infection, and strict adherence to the prescribed regimen of all HIV medications is necessary to reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to others.
Uses and Dosage
Epzicom is a composite pharmaceutical formulation employed in treating HIV, the viral agent responsible for developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Note that Epzicom does not possess curative properties for HIV or AIDS.
The typical adult dosage of Epzicom for treating HIV infection is one tablet administered orally once a day. Epzicom is recommended for other antiretroviral agents, specifically for managing HIV-1 conditions.
For nonoccupational exposure, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests the adult dosage of one tablet taken orally once a day. The duration of therapy for this indication is generally 28 days.
Regarding occupational exposure, the recommendations provided by the US Public Health Service working group align with the usual adult dosage of one tablet taken orally once daily.
The duration of therapy for this type of exposure is also 28 days, assuming it is well-tolerated.
Regarding pediatric use for HIV infection, when the child’s body weight is at least 25 kg, the typical dose of Epzicom is one tablet administered orally once a day.
