Description
IndicationsÂ
The EpiPen Auto-Injector Jr is a device used to administer epinephrine in a severe allergic reaction, also known as anaphylaxis, in children who weigh between 15 kg and 30 kg. Epinephrine is a medication that helps reverse the rapid and dangerous decrease in blood pressure, relaxes the muscles in the airways to make breathing easier, and relaxes the muscles in the stomach, intestines, and bladder.Â
EpiPen Jr Auto-Injector is intended for immediate administration as emergency supportive therapy only and is not intended as a substitute for immediate medical or hospital care. Seek emergency medical help right away, even if the EpiPen Jr Auto-Injector has been used. If symptoms continue or if the first auto-injector is activated, a second EpiPen Jr Auto-Injector may be used. However, if more than two doses are needed for an allergy emergency, they must be given by a healthcare provider. Â
Use and DosageÂ
The EpiPen Jr comes in a pre-filled, single-use tube that contains the epinephrine solution and features a spring-loaded needle that quickly injects the medication into the thigh muscle. It is administered by injecting the device into the outer thigh muscle. Â
Before using the EpiPen Jr Auto-Injector, inform your healthcare provider about any medical conditions you have, such as heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid problems, asthma, a history of depression, Parkinson’s disease, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.Â
The recommended dose of the Epinephrine is 0.15 mg in children weighing between 15 and 30 kilograms (33 and 66 pounds). Children weighing less than 15 kg may require a different dose or device.Â
To use the EpiPen Jr Auto-Injector, follow these steps:Â
- Remove the EpiPen Jr Auto-Injector from the carrier tube.Â
- Grasp the EpiPen Jr Auto-Injector with the orange tip pointing downward.Â
- Remove the blue safety cap by pulling it straight up. Do not bend or twist the cap.Â
- Place the orange tip against the middle of the outer thigh. Â
- Swing and push the auto-injector firmly into the thigh until it clicks.Â
- Hold the EpiPen Jr Auto-Injector firmly in place for three seconds. Count slowly, 1, 2, 3.Â
- After using the EpiPen Jr Auto-Injector, seek immediate medical attention by calling 911 or going to the emergency room. The effects of epinephrine can wear off, or a second reaction may occur. Additional treatment may be required.Â
Keep the EpiPen Jr Auto-Injector in its carrier tube to protect it from damage. The blue safety cap should be kept on until the device is ready to be used. The EpiPen Jr Auto-Injector should be stored at room temperature.Â
