Description
Indications
Penciclovir is a medication used for the treatment of “cold sores/fever blisters” (herpes labialis). Its primary function is to accelerate the healing process and alleviate symptoms associated with cold sores, including tingling, pain, burning, and itching. Penciclovir belongs to a class of medications called antivirals, which work by inhibiting the growth of the herpes virus.
This medication does not cure herpes or prevent the transmission of the infection to others. It does not provide protection against future occurrences of cold sores.
Uses and Dosage
To effectively utilize this medication, it should be promptly applied at the first signs of infection, such as tingling, burning, redness, or the appearance of sores. Before and after applying the medication, ensure that your hands are thoroughly washed with soap and water. Clean and dry the affected areas prior to application. A thin layer of penciclovir cream should be gently rubbed into the area, fully covering the cold sore or the region experiencing tingling, itching, redness, or swelling. Follow the instructions provided by your doctor, typically applying the cream every 2 hours (excluding sleep) for a duration of 4 days.
Remember, this medication is for external use only and should not be applied in or near the eyes as it may cause irritation. In the event of accidental contact with the eyes, rinse them with plenty of water. Avoid applying the medication inside the mouth or nose.
The dosage of this medication is determined based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not exceed the prescribed frequency or duration of use.
To derive the maximum benefit from this medication, it should be used consistently. Maintaining a steady level of drug absorption through the skin is crucial for optimal results.
