Indications 

DDAVP MELT is a prescribed medication indicated for children aged 5 and above experiencing primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE), a condition characterized by bedwetting during nighttime. 

Moreover, DDAVP MELT is prescribed to manage or prevent excessive urination, intense thirst, and fluid loss linked to Diabetes Insipidus (impaired kidney water retention) after head trauma and pituitary gland surgery. 

DDAVP MELT is a synthetic substitute for vasopressin, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that controls water balance in the body. By replenishing depleted vasopressin levels, it helps regulate urine production, alleviate excessive thirst and urination associated with specific conditions, and prevent dehydration. 

Uses and Dosage

The prescribed dosage of this medication may differ for each person, contingent on their medical condition and their response to the treatment. 

DDAVP MELT comes as a sublingual disintegrating tablet that melts when placed under the tongue. 

Ensure your hands are dry before removing the tablet from its packaging. Place the tablet under your tongue and allow it to dissolve. Refrain from chewing or swallowing the tablet whole. 

For the treatment of bedwetting, this medication is usually taken once daily, one hour before bedtime. Restrict your child’s fluid intake after dinner, particularly within one hour of bedtime and until at least 8 hours after taking the medication in the morning. 

For the treatment of diabetes insipidus, this medication is usually taken 2 to 3 times a day. 

Restrict fluid intake while taking this medication and consult your doctor for specific guidelines. Promptly inform your doctor if you consume more fluids than prescribed. 

To achieve the best outcomes, take DDAVP MELT exactly as directed, at the same times each day. Do not alter the prescribed dosage, frequency, and duration of treatment without your doctor’s approval. 

Notify your doctor if your condition fails to improve or the effectiveness of this medication diminishes. 

Side Effects 

The potential adverse effects of DDAVP MELT are outlined below. Should any of these symptoms persist or worsen, promptly inform your doctor. 

Common Side Effects 

• Headache 
• Dizziness 
• Dry mouth 
• Nausea 
• Mild stomach pain 

Serious Side Effects 

• Symptoms of low sodium levels: 
  • Headache 
  • Confusion 
  • Hallucinations 
  • Muscle cramps 
  • Severe weakness 
  • Vomiting 
  • Loss of coordination 
  • Restlessness or unsteadiness 
• Flushing (sudden warmth, redness, or tingling sensation) 
• Swelling and weight gain 
• Seizure 
• Weak or shallow breathing 
• Feeling light-headed, possibly leading to fainting 

Promptly notify your doctor if you encounter any of the serious side effects listed above. Older individuals may have a higher probability of experiencing these side effects. 

Allergic Reactions 

In rare cases, DDAVP MELT may trigger a severe allergic response. Promptly seek medical assistance if you observe any indications of such a reaction, including: 

• Swelling (especially in the face, tongue, or throat) 
• Hives 
• Breathing difficulties

Cautions 

Before starting treatment with DDAVP MELT, inform your doctor if you have any known allergies, particularly to desmopressin or any components present in this disintegrating tablet. 

Disclose to your doctor your medical history before taking DDAVP MELT to determine its suitability for your condition, particularly if you have a history of: 

• Kidney disease 
• Heart conditions (e.g., blocked blood vessels, heart failure) 
• High blood pressure 
• Low blood sodium levels (hyponatremia) 
• Conditions that raise the risk of fluid and mineral imbalances (e.g., cystic fibrosis, eating disorders, urinary retention) 
• Excessive thirst unrelated to genuine thirst 
• Specific neurological condition (syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion) 
• Particular adrenal gland disorder (Addison’s disease) 
• Bleeding or clotting disorders 

Oral or inhaled glucocorticoids, tolvaptan, and diuretics, commonly referred to as ‘water pills’ like furosemide, may interact with DDAVP MELT. To prevent such drug interactions, inform all your healthcare providers of your complete medication regimen, including prescriptions, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and herbal supplements. 

During pregnancy, DDAVP MELT should only be used if necessary. Consult your doctor to understand the potential risks and benefits of this medication. 

Before breastfeeding, seek your doctor’s guidance, as desmopressin can transfer into breast milk.
