Drug Description

Indications

Cyclopentolate is utilized prior to eye examinations, specifically refraction exams. It falls under the category of anticholinergic drugs. The mechanism of action of cyclopentolate involves the temporary dilation of the pupil of the eye and relaxation of the eye muscles.

Uses and Dosage

The administration of this medication typically involves applying it to the eye approximately 40 to 50 minutes before the scheduled procedure or as instructed by your healthcare provider. In some cases, the dose may need to be repeated within a 5 to 10-minute interval.

When applying the eye drops, begin by washing your hands thoroughly. To prevent contamination, avoid touching the dropper tip or allowing it to come into contact with your eye or any other surface. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using the eye drops and consult your doctor for guidance on when you can resume wearing them. If you are using any other type of eye medication, such as drops or ointments, inquire with your doctor about the appropriate timing for their use.

To administer the eye drops:

  1. Tilt your head back, look upward, and gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
  2. Directly position the dropper above your eye and dispense one drop into the pouch.
  3. Then, look downward and softly close your eyes for approximately 1 to 2 minutes.
  4. Place a finger at the corner of your eye near the nose and gently apply pressure for 2 to 3 minutes.
  5. This technique helps prevent the medication from draining away and minimizes potential side effects. Avoid blinking and refraining from rubbing your eye.
  6. Repeat these steps if your prescribed dosage consists of more than one drop or for the other eye if instructed accordingly.
  7. After use, do not rinse the dropper. Replace the cap securely.

If you are administering this medication to a child’s eye(s), be careful to prevent any contact between the medicine and the child’s mouth. Following application, remember to wash your hands as well as the child’s hands to remove any residual medication.

In infants, this medication may cause temporary alterations in digestion. Refrain from feeding an infant for a period of 4 hours following the eye examination.

The onset of action for this medication is typically rapid, with effects lasting up to 24 hours or potentially longer. If you continue to experience blurred vision, light sensitivity, or dilated pupils several days after the examination, inform your doctor.
