Indications 

Catapres is a prescription medicine used to mitigate elevated blood pressure levels and reduce the risk of associated adverse events, such as stroke, myocardial infarction, and renal complications. 

Catapres can be taken alone or concomitantly with other antihypertensive agents. It belongs to the class of drugs called central alpha agonists, which works by stimulating alpha-adrenoreceptors in the brain stem, resulting in the relaxation of blood vessels, thereby promoting more efficient blood flow. 

Uses and Dosage 

Before starting treatment with Catapres and every time you refill your prescription, thoroughly review its medication guide and patient information leaflet. If you have any questions or concerns, consult with your physician or pharmacist to ensure that you fully understand the medication and its associated risks and benefits. 

Catapres dosage may vary per individual depending on some factors, including age, medical history, any concurrent medications, and response to treatment. To mitigate the likelihood of adverse effects, it is usually given at a low dose and is gradually increased. 

The typical starting dose of Catapres is 0.1mg tablets taken twice a day. It can be taken without regard to food, one in the morning and one before bedtime. 

Remember to consistently take Catapres at the same time every day to optimize its efficacy. Discontinuing use without the guidance of a physician may lead to withdrawal symptoms, so it is essential to follow your doctor’s instructions. 

Side Effects 

Potential adverse reactions associated with the use of Catapres are listed below; if you experience persistent or worsening symptoms, inform your physician or pharmacist.

• Dizziness 
• Drowsiness 
• Fatigue 
• Constipation 
• Headache

Serious Side Effects 

• Nervousness 
• Agitation 
• Headache 
• Tremor 
• A rapid rise in blood pressure 

Seek immediate medical attention if any of the above-listed severe symptoms occur. 

Allergic Reactions 

Although infrequent, Catapres administration may result in a severe allergic reaction. If any of the following symptoms are observed, seek medical attention without delay: 

• Rash 
• Itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat 
• Severe dizziness 
• Trouble breathing

Caution 

Before taking Catapres, inform your healthcare provider of any history of hypersensitivity, particularly regarding the medication itself or any of its inactive components that may provoke an allergic reaction. 

Disclose your medical history to your doctor, especially kidney disease and heart rhythm problems (such as slow/irregular heartbeat or second- or third-degree atrioventricular block). 

To avoid drug interaction, inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including prescription/nonprescription drugs, supplements, and herbal products.  

The use of this medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness. It is strongly advised to abstain from activities requiring cognitive alertness, such as driving or operating heavy machinery, until sufficient competence is regained.  

The concurrent consumption of alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) may augment dizziness or drowsiness. It is recommended to limit the intake of alcoholic beverages. If you are utilizing marijuana (cannabis), it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. 

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other products that possess sedative properties, including: 

• antihistamines (such as cetirizine, diphenhydramine) 
• sleep or anxiety medications (such as alprazolam, diazepam, zolpidem) 
• muscle relaxants 
• opioid pain relievers (such as codeine) 

Prior to having surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using Catapres. You may be advised to stop taking them for a short time.
